A proposed Nebraska bill, Senate File 65, would tax intangible property including moneys and credits at four mills on actual valuation. The plan also taxes mortgages at fifty cents per hundred, and state local bonds at one mill. Amendments are pending, with action expected at 10 o'clock.
Hans Seivers, custodian of the courthouse, was seen tending the garden east of the courthouse grounds signaling spring. He noted early vegetables like lettuce and radishes coming soon as he spotted a ladies powder puff on the lawn yesterday, a lighthearted sign of the season.
County board approves appointments of Peter Hansen and George K Staats 4S as Plattsmouth city assessors and George H Olive as Weeping Water city assessor. They will head the countywide property listing at the next assessment.
A small blaze erupted at C. A. Johnson's Wintersteen hill residence when a child lit a candle with matches and dropped it on a feather bed. Neighbors and family extinguished the fire before the fire truck arrived, causing only the feather bed to be destroyed.
Paul Hackenholz of Omaha pleaded not guilty in county court to breaking into the Missouri Pacific freight house on February 2 and taking 128 shirts valued at 193 dollars from M. E. Smith company. A $1000 bond was set, secured by his parents, and preliminary hearing was waived.
Mike Lutz and wife returned from a three month visit to the Pacific coast and the west. They traveled via the southern route to Calexico and Los Angeles, then north to see points of interest, returning through Salt Lake City and Denver to resume duties as street commissioner. Both report improved health and renewed vigor.
The Q Z society of the Presbyterian church held its regular meeting yesterday at the Coronado Apartments hosted by Mrs W C Soennichsen. A large group of ladies attended enjoying social conversation amusements and a luncheon. A business session followed the afternoon gathering.
The Loyal Workers of the Christian church gathered yesterday at the parsonage hosted by Mesdames A. G. Hollowell and W. C. Clark. Mrs. Oscar Sandin gave an engaging reading, followed by sewing and socializing among attendees. Refreshments were served.
County commissioners renew the contract with J. H. Tams and his wife to remain in charge of the county farm west of the city for another year. Tams receives a salary increase to 125 dollars per month, with Mrs. Tams named matron at 50 dollars monthly. The board lauds their businesslike admin istration, noting the farm’s status as the state’s best county institution and its careful cost management.
Mr. and Mrs. James W. Seivers observed their fifty second wedding anniversary on February 24 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A Rennie near Madrid Nebraska. The couple married in old Virginia and have ten children twenty two grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
M Fanger announces a contest in Cass county inviting votes from customers to select the most popular boy under 13. The winning boy will receive a fine electric miniature automobile displayed in the store window, with ballots earned through purchases.

Mrs Jande Richardson came home from the Methodist hospital in Omaha where she had been recovering from an operation. She will rest at her mother's home near Pacific Junction before returning to her own residence. Mr Richardson accompanied her home. Friends sent bouquets from Methodist ladies and the Eagles lodge to wish her well.
In Union two cases were disposed of before Judge Allen J. Beeson. John Ervin faced liquor possession charges and paid a $100 fine plus costs. Nelson Martin was cited for intoxication on February 5 and fined $20 with trimmings, which were paid. The mash ownership remains unsolved and investigations continue.
Mr and Mrs R D McNurlin returned Tuesday morning from visiting their children in Havelock Omaha and Central City They left here last December They reported a fine time with plenty to eat Two of their sons operate restaurants in Omaha and Central City Mrs McNurlin had car trouble While Dick was away two men attempted to steal a move on the house but he had three jobs lined up including moving the Mt Pleasant Precinct house where he lived fifty years ago
A. S. Mirrich division engineer and R. H. Stuart assistant engineer discussed county road projects with the board of county commissioners. They oversee most road work in the region and planned to interview Johnson county officials in Tecumseh.
Cass Camp No. 332 Modern Woodmen of America prepares for a March 9 initiation. Nineteen new members will be received as local officers and leaders aim to have each member recruit one new member for the event.

H. C. Long of near Murray spent a few hours in the city visiting friends and attending to business at the courthouse during his short stay.

The Chicago Burlington & Quincy railroad announces a proposed wage reduction for track laborers and maintenance workers and for freight handlers. A meeting with employee representatives is planned in Chicago on March 10 to discuss a new scale, pegged to living costs and current wages, with final adjustment possible by the U S Railroad Labor Board if no agreement is reached.
Elmwood residents show strong interest in forming a Cass county national guard unit to join the state and national defense force. An adjutant general representative will visit soon to discuss enrollment and progress. Former service members in the area may provide valuable drill and service experience.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gus Olson were held at St John Catholic Church Omaha. The requiem Mass was celebrated by Father M A Shine with many old friends present. Relatives attending included Conrad Guthmann Pittsburg PA Mrs Esther Carley and Miss Ruth Nelson Omaha and Fred Nelson Denver.
Dr J J Hall returned from Grant Nebraska where he visited his brother Major A Hall during illness. The brother is improving and on the road to recovery. The land there is moving with wind storms but Grant is a fine enterprising town with evident energy and a bright future.
A luncheon at the Hotel Wagner brought together city business men who formed an Ad Club. C. C. Wescott was named president and F. P. Busch secretary. The group will address mutual business interests and hold weekly informal luncheons while coordinating with the Chamber of Commerce.
Harry Eller joined a group in Stohlmans hardware to lift a heavy load with teeth. A 110 pound keg of nails hung by rope slipped and pulled out his two lower front teeth. Dr. Anderson will fit a bridge. friends call him a champion lifter.
