The Commercial club met Sunday with a fair turnout despite heat. Members discussed band concert funding, road improvements north of the city, and a potential Missouri Pacific betterment including a motor link to Union and Omaha.
The J F Douglass property on High School Hill is sold to George A Sayles. Douglass keeps a lot and a half and plans a new model home on the adjacent lots. The corner lot at Main and Eleventh streets offers easy access to the business district and is highly desirable for a residence.
A severe rainstorm drenched the city yesterday with torrents and flooding. The Stokes farm on the sand bar east suffered heavy flooding as sewer water from near the Burlington subway washed over to cornfields and over the baseball grounds, where water stood several feet on the diamond. Locals call for protective measures to divert floodwater from the park and ball fields.
In Nebraska the press association debates boom editions of Show papers for fall advertising. The Plainsmouth Journal argues editors should use editorial columns to advocate issues, not hire paid secretaries or lobbyists, and urges editors to focus on their work and public service.
In Woodman Hall on Monday evening residents voted 25 to 4 to issue an additional 85 000 bonds for building and equipment costs. The measure follows a prior bond, enabled by the last legislature to fund needed school facilities in the district.
A runaway hearse owned by Andy Harwick used by the water company sped down South Sixth during a heavy rainstorm. The horse, usually gentle, bolted with great speed, narrowly avoided bystanders who feared being trampled. Mrs Maude and others attempted to stop it, were knocked down, but the horse calmed and returned home after the harness was removed.
The Nebraska Lighting company plans a new plant here to greatly improve service. Until the new plant is ready, power will be sourced from Red Oak. When finished, the city may become the main plant supplying power to quarries west of the Platte and towns east of the river.
The state convention of the P KB OF society at Hebron Nebraska concluded its session with officer elections for the year. Chapter F of the city honored by selecting Mrs Hi D Travis as corresponding secretary. Mrs Travis, president of the local chapter, has long contributed to its success and her election is welcomed by friends. She attended the convention with Mrs C A Rawls, the chapter's delegate.
H. Vaniorn has secured a Diamond Reproducer attachment for the Edison phonograph and will demonstrate the device at John Nemele’s store Saturday afternoon. The machine is touted as the finest talking machine yet built. attend to see it.
Al and Syl Hathaway purchased Blair Pitter's 80 acre farm, one mile west of the village, for 87000 dollars after selling their forty acre home northeast of town to seek a larger place, leaving open the chance for a Union lassie to find a home and a husband.
The Soennichsen store announces a new basement china department with one of the largest stocks of china and glassware in the area. Shoppers are invited to view the expanded exhibition as the store remains busy serving customers through the day.
A 30th birthday party was held at the home of Mr and Mrs Louis G Meisinger west of Mynard on June 6. Guests enjoyed social games a luncheon of ice cream cake bananas and lemonade. List of attendees includes numerous Meisingers Heil Vallery Perry Barker Barker Nolling and others with Ellen Nora Meisinger present.
County court convened to hear claims in the estate of the late Ella F Snewerson. Administrator John Wunderlish traveled from Nehawka to oversee proceedings.
Mrs. Kitlie Tucker leaves after months in attendance on her mother the late Mrs. Gussie Nix. She travels to her home in Port Morgan Colorado.
Mrs Mary Everett living three miles northeast of town suffered a paralytic stroke at 5 oclock yesterday. Prompt physician aid from Dr Huston Union and Dr Gilmore Murray helped hold the ailment in check. Telegraph sent to her son Edward Lyverett Glen dive Mont asking him to hurry. Latest report says she is slightly improved but not out of danger.
