Hoover tariff row focuses on flexible clause in conference plan
Washington May 29 A Senate clash over a revised flexible clause in the tariff bill centers on whether President Hoover would sign a measure granting broad rate powers to a nonpartisan tariff commission. Senator Watson of Indiana defends Hoover and argues the president seeks a capable commission with time to act on rate changes up to 50 percent. Opponents say the proposal expands presidential power and struck down earlier safeguards. Bee-News reports the debate amid party tensions and procedural points on a 60 day certification timeline.
