The Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting at Hotel Plattsmouth. President J. Howard Davis led the session as plans for 1939 were approved, including WPA project efforts and river and infrastructure improvements.
Friday's Daily notes S. Davis made a business trip to Louisville and Weeping Water yesterday. The report records the two locations visited in a brief local diary style entry.
John M. Meisinger enters a fifth term as Cass County constable and justice of the peace, having been appointed four years ago by Judge A. H. Duxbury and Judge C. L. Graves. Friends express pleasure at his continued service.
The stockholders meeting named H A Schneider as president and Carl J Schneider as vice president with Frank A Cloidt cashier. Directors include H A Schneider C J Schneider Frank A Cloidt and Henry Horn. Surplus fund increases to about 40000. Carl Schneider praised as energetic and capable in banking.
Walter Tritsch reported his automobile stolen from in front of the Cononado apartments on Vine street after the family left for the evening. Sheriff Joe Mrasek and Deputy Emery Doody led a search, tracing the vehicle through Union and Nehawka areas before it was found near Herald apartments and returned to the courthouse.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Stohlman of Louisville visited the court house and renewed their Journal subscription. Mrs. W. T. Schlichtemeier and daughter from Omaha also called at the Journal to advance their subscription for another year while they attend to matters at the court house. They express satisfaction with life in the metro polis and note wheat needs moisture.

The Bourne family near Murray welcomed a fine eight pound son this morning. Both mother and child are doing well and the birth brings happiness to the family. The baby is a grandson of Mrs. Bessie Bourne and Mr. Gradoville, and the twenty fourth grandchild of the Gradovilles. Mrs. Bourne was formerly Miss Dorothy Gradoville.
This afternoon at 12 15 a fine little daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Everett Pickens of this city at the Methodist hospital in Omaha. Both mother and baby are reported progressing nicely. Friends extend congratulations to the happy parents and family.
The children and families of L. E. Vroman express heartfelt thanks to friends for help during the death and burial and for floral remembrances and Reverend Lawson for his sympathetic words.
William Jennings Seybert and Mrs Honor Young of Dayton Ohio visit their mother Mrs W H Seybert and sister Mrs C A Marshall at their home. Mrs Seybert not well, children come to enjoy a visit.
A large plate glass entry window at C. E. Wescott's Sons was found broken by night officers after 9 o clock. It appears someone kicked or struck the glass, causing a sizable loss to the firm as the pane is among the city’s largest.
Plattsmouth lodge No. 6 A F and A M held their officer installation with many members present. Raymond C. Cook officiated as installing officer with W F Evers marshal and C C Hudson chaplain. Officers installed include W M J R Reeder S W Ralph Wehlertbein J W Wayne A Bennett Treasurer Frank A Cloidt Secretary L W Niel S D John Parkenine J D Howard Davis Chaplain H G McClusky S S Olivan Deles Dernier J S Dr D C Hudson Tyler John E Sehntz. Refreshments followed.
The funeral services for L. E. Vroman were held at Sattler funeral home with many railroad friends in attendance. Rev. J. C. Lawson of the First Methodist church led the service and praised his community work and care for loved ones. Mrs. E. H. Wescott sang two favorites as Mr. Wescott played accompaniment. The interment followed at Oak Hill cemetery with pallbearers from Burlington railroad service.
The local re employment service reports 62 registrations on opening day and 67 on the next under the unemployment insurance compensation act. The law requires employers of eight or more workers to contribute a percentage to the state fund matched by federal funds. Registrations come from all sections of Cass county. WPA PWA and domestic labor are not covered by the act.
Fred Druecker leaves the city for a several week trip to California visiting San Diego and other points on the west coast.
Max Hollenbeck 21 a well known Elmwood area farmer ended his life at the farm home north of Elmwood. He shot himself in the forehead with a .22 rifle, his body found by a younger brother as he tended farm work. Authorities ruled the death a suicide and no inquest was held.
Six members from Louisville American Legion post Blair Crawford Hazen Johnson McCafferty and Zastera attended the Plattsmouth post meeting last night. They shared a brief business session then joined in card games and a lunch. They back state takeover of the Platte River bridge to toll free status discussed in the current legislature. About fifteen local Legionnaires were present.
A short mourning verse from the Renner Family expresses that Chester is not dead but away in a distant land. The poem recalls his cheerful farewell and lingering presence in memory, urging readers to picture him as still the same beloved person.
Sheriff and Mrs Joe Mrasek settled in the jail building north of the courthouse moving into the living quarters Thursday afternoon and arranging their household effects. Mr and Mrs Homer Sylvester and family have moved to the Brinkman residence on Pearl street and are settling into the new home.
The Missouri Pacific railroad company applied to the state railway commission for permission to substitute a custodian for an agent at Manley station. A hearing on the request will be scheduled for a later date.
Norman Renner and C. J. Baum gart returned Friday night from Hamburg Missouri where they were to view the site where Chester Renner met death December 31 after a trip tied to the case.
An announcement in the Journal details a $500 contest for rural schools in the territory. Nearly two dozen Plattsmouth merchants, including the Journal, sponsor prizes from $87.50 to $25 weekly awards. Votes come from purchases and ad clipping. teachers collect slips, with extra votes for past due amounts, produce sold, farm subscriptions, and other promos. First weekly prize awarded after January 21. record-keeping handled by teachers at contest HQ.
Ambrose Claus alerted by a noise near the OK garage led to police action. Officers Pickrell and Boetel stopped two men, Earl Arnold and Earl Price, as they loaded tires and batteries into a car at 1 30 a m. The suspects were booked and will be turned over to county authorities.
Eleven year old Peter Halmes son of Mr and Mrs William Halmes residing west of the city was injured when a 14 gauge shotgun discharged while he and his father were returning from a hunting trip. Shots struck the index and large finger of the right hand injuring the fingernail. The boy was brought to Dr L S Pucelik office where the wound was dressed and he was made comfortable.
County extension agents sponsor an open meeting at the Mynard Community building on Wednesday January 11 at 1 30 pm. The discussion covers complete and detailed lessons on farmstead and lawn improvements and invites all interested residents to attend.
County Attorney Walter H. Smith visited Nebraska City to oversee matters in the county court and check on ongoing legal proceedings.
