Bureau Curtails Land Entry To Help Water Conservation
The U S Bureau of Land Management will drastically curb desert land entries in Central and Southwestern Arizona to conserve groundwater. About 98 percent of the 800+ applications for 320 acre plots are expected to be rejected, with 538 already disapproved and 25 withdrawn. Governor Pyle supports the move, citing threatened agricultural economy and depleted aquifers. A public hearing on Maricopa County drilling restrictions is set for August 23 in Phoenix.

Literary Guidepost and Two Historical Novels Review
W. G. Rogers surveys The Golden Road by Peter Bourne set in early Panama Railroad building with Henry Stewart chasing a thief after a $5,000 payroll is stolen. He befriends Zachary Fox and Abigail Vandusen among engineers, gamblers, and prospector peers in a 19th century Boston-Panama backdrop. WRITTEN IN THE STARS by F Hope Fisher centers on Agnes Frey’s romance with Albrecht Durer amid 15th–16th century Nürnberg, amid caravan raids and Jewish persecution, praised as a pleasant sentimental tale despite stilted narration.

Williams Air Force Base personnel contributed 92 pints, while Kingman 232 Winslow 96 and Williams 100 added to the total. The Red Cross notes servicemen donate far more, amid ongoing peace parley and hospital needs for wounded in combat areas and hospitals. Mrs. Fred V.
