At Panmunjom, North Korean Gen Nam Il rejected any shift from demanding a buffer zone along the 38th Parallel and refused to even examine a map of the area, prolonging stalemate in ninth straight day of truce talks.
Torrential rains sparked three Big Thompson River cloudburst crests and flash floods across northern Colorado. Five people died, including a Johnson family of four swept away at Dad's Place near Estes Park, while Aden E. Webb, 86, perished at Bellevue. Rescue teams searched trees to reach marooned residents as floods hit Fort Collins campuses and highways.
About 90 cadets facing expulsion at West Point held a mass meeting to protest a perceived raw deal as final processing loomed. They claimed widespread cheating, demanded legal advice and an honorable discharge, asserting more than 200 involved in the scheme dating back to 1946.
Tokyo Aug 4 Gen Matthew Ridgway supreme UN commander summoned top advisers for an urgent meeting at an apparent critical point in Korean cease fire negotiations in Kaesong. Indications Ridgway acted on possible special instructions from Washington.
In Kaesong at 11 a.m. tomorrow the 20th meeting ends. U.N. spokesman Brig. Gen. William Nuckols said no nearer to an accord, rejecting a 38th Parallel buffer as indefensible. Joy closed a brief session alleging Communist violations of the neutral zone around Kaesong.
Belgrade reports Yugoslavia warned Romania and Hungary they would face consequences for border violations. Premier Tito’s government accused both neighbors of hostile policy, citing 53 border incidents with Romania since May and 38 provocations by Hungary in the last two months.
A large search party will include 100 soldiers and 12 to 15 planes plus a mounted sheriff's posse under Sheriff Jim Washum to locate Klaus Martens and June Marijane Walker, missing since July 15 after departing East Los Angeles for Blythe. Police trapped and captured them after a gunfight prompted by Wolfner’s call for help.
In Tokyo on August 4 the Ridgway HQ said Russia started the Korea War to weaken China and may split the Soviet Union from the Chinese Red government. A gas leak blast demolished a west Colorado Springs frame house early today injuring two adults and two younger children. Linda Thanscheidt, age six, died from the explosion while Ardith E. Thanscheidt and his wife, plus children David Lee eight and Karen four, were treated for injuries.
World famed tropical disease expert Dr. Malcolm H. Soule 54 killed himself with snake venom injected with morphine after being fired from the University of Michigan for mishandling about $487.05 in funds. He was found by his wife Alma as he wrote a death note and a dismissal notice, dying about 20 minutes after the injection. Police and coroner gave details while the university declined further comment.
