Planting Too Close Is Common Orchard Error

An orchardist from Iowa State College advises home growers that crowding trees leads to dying lower branches and difficult picking. Apple trees should be 36 to 40 feet apart, pears and cherries 20 to 25 feet, plums and peaches 15 to 18 feet, with spacing ensuring fruit trees grow both wide and tall.

Spacing Tips for Small Fruit Plantings and Trees

The article advises spacing fruit trees and berries to avoid crowding as they grow. Raspberries require ample row spacing, blackberries 4 feet between plants in a row, grapes 8 to 10 feet between vines with rows 10 feet apart, and strawberries about 4 feet between rows with 18 inches between plants. Also avoid planting near windbreaks and fences to allow proper irrigation and care.
