Rotary Heard Kempkes Talk Legion History
Pella Rotarians heard an informative history of the Pella American Legion Post and its members. Yunis Kempke, a Rotary member, presented a complete record of the post from organization to the present, including WWI soldiers and veterans. The talk covered early fundraising, the building’s erection, and the $19,000 invested in facilities. Kempkes noted limited civic cooperation at times and the failed bond vote of 889 to 624 for a Memorial project. The Ladies Auxiliary recently served about 1,200 meals in the Legion building. Kempkes won the Town Legion prize for the last two years for his comprehensive history of the Pella post.
