Breeding Cows to Freshen Every 12 Months Urged
Iowa State College dairy specialist Dwight Espe advises farmers to dry cows for six to eight weeks, but aims to freshen cows on a 12 month schedule. Monitor heat dates from two months after calving until bred, ensure health, and call a vet if not settled by the second or third cycle. Even with challenges, many cows can freshen about every 15 months, though long calving intervals raise feed costs.
