Complete Range Program Pays for Pullets in Iowa

Iowa State College extension poultryman Robert McVicker warns many farmers lose money with incomplete range rearing for pullets. A complete program requires shade with feeders and waterers, rotation to fresh legume pasture, proximity to the farm, a predator-proof shelter, and well drained rising ground to prevent disease and losses. If a full program cannot be followed, raising pullets in confinement may be more profitable.

Merion Bluegrass Emerges as Top Cool Season Grass

Merion bluegrass earns a strong reputation as a superior cool season grass though it cannot match bentgrasses or creeping fescues. Extension horticulturist A E Cott notes USDA studies show best results when sown alone or with Kentucky bluegrass in a newly prepared seed bed. Over seeding on established lawns or mixing with other grasses risks losing much of the expensive seed. Merion thrives at 70 to 80 degrees, tolerates hot dry weather, and tolerates closer mowing better than other bluegrasses.
