Plans announced for a mass Navy recruiting drive in the Iowa Great Lakes region. Induction ceremonies are set for June 4 and 5 in Spirit Lake and Arnolds Park with a parade, Navy Band, mass concert, barbecue, USO show, and dance. May volunteers will be brought to the region for the weekend under joint sponsorship by the U S Navy and Spirit Lake Chamber of Commerce.
Harold R. Sorenson EMC U S N Navy recruiter from Des Moines will be at the Pella Post Office from 9:30 to 11:30 every Monday to interview men for a mass recruiting program. Governors from Iowa Nebraska South Dakota and Minnesota have been invited and recruits will board a special train to Great Lakes Naval Training Station after induction.
E and H bond purchases in Marion county for the first quarter totalled $656,999.00 amounting to 45 percent of the 1955 quota. Purchases reached $50,818,686 nationwide for 87 percent of the year quota, up 14 percent from 1954 and 56 percent from the first three months of E L Job of Knoxville and P H Kuyper of Pella chaired the drive.
County officials tout Marin bonds program as highly popular with the income bond series. Three month Iowa H bond sales reach 27,009,500, up from 16,943,600 in 1954 and 7,598,000 in 1953. Adjacent counties show earnings. Mahaska County reports 576,281.00 in purchases.
The Iowa division of the American Cancer Society reports it has expended $1,266,168 on cancer research over the past eight years. Of this total, $466,572 was allocated to the state research program at Iowa City, Ames, and Council Bluffs.
