Huge Pine Tree Found by Miners Near Knoxville

Dr. C A Arnold of the University of Michigan says a fossilized pine specimen found on John M Barnett farm five miles southeast of Knoxville is the largest of its kind in the United States. The 125 foot long trunk, about five feet in diameter, was removed in pieces during strip mining. The tree, an araucarian type, likely grew in a tropical forest about 250 million years ago. Accompanied by Dr Theodore Deleveryas and H R Straight, Arnold notes earlier identification as Lepidodendron ferns is incorrect.
