Mount Locke Chosen for UT McDonald Observatory Site

Astronomers select Mount Locke about 400 miles from Austin for near perfect starlight. Factors include low vibration from the railroad 40 miles away, minimal glare from distant Fort Davis streetlights, and dust control from foliage. The 2006 acre Mount Locke site, donated in 1933 by Mrs Violet Locke McIver of Concord New Hampshire, aims for optimal southern sky access.
