High court says state may aid church colleges with grants
The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that states may give direct financial grants to church related colleges without violating church state separation. The Maryland program, upheld 1971, funds private colleges not primarily awarding seminarium degrees, requires college presidents to verify secular use and report after a year. Seventeen colleges receive money. Notre Dame Loyola Baltimore and Mount Saint Mary's cited.
