Santa Fe Railway president John S. Reed said the system is ready to haul the coming grain movement with more than 20 000 covered hoppers and over 3 000 loaded box cars, aided by 10 000 covered hoppers, ongoing car repairs, and stockpiling at strategic points to meet June and July demand. He noted potential local shortages if elevators run under capacity and stressed cooperation among farmers and elevators to ensure transportation. Reed cited last year’s smooth 1971 harvest as a confidence booster and pledged adequate locomotives for the peak period.
