Incumbent Ismael Carrasco led Reeves County Democrats with 361 votes, beating Melvin Schnack. In statewide contests Dolph Briscoe defeated Sissy Farenthold 1,327 to 612 in the gubernatorial run-off, while Hank Grover topped Albert Fay in the Republican race.

Pecos High Adds Three Driver Training Classes
Pecos High School expanded driver education to seven sections with about 35 students per class, totaling around 245 students. English III and IV classes run six days a week through July 15, with English IV taught by Irene Turk and English III by Mona Miller and Debra Wirt. the driving portion continues into early August. New Pecos Post Office to Open New Boxes June 20
The Pecos Post Office will put 1 320 new boxes into use June 20 replacing the 1 256 old boxes. A new Morrison office, two counters, air conditioning and blank panels were added as part of expansion. Old boxes will be returned to the contractor while some numbers changed due to manufacturer updates. Project has run a year with potential more work. June 30 end date uncertain.

U.S. officials plan to seek extradition of a Western Airlines hijacker and the $500000 extorted from the airline. They expect success in recovering the money but doubt Algeria will return the hijacker and his woman friend, both linked to the Black Panther exile HQ in Algeria. Fiddlers Contest Debuts During Pecos Rodeo Week
The Pecos Lions Club sponsors a fiddle contest open to Pecos and surrounding areas during Rodeo Week on July 2 at the Community Center. First prize 125 dollars, second 75, third 25. Lewis named Pecos new juvenile authority
John F. Lewis, 101 Daggett St., is Pecos Reeves County Juvenile Officer replacing retiree J. E. Couch. A 38 year old veteran of law enforcement since 1956, he brings extensive juvenile work, training from multiple state and federal schools, and fluency in Spanish. He will be on call 24 hours, aim to head off problems before they require police intervention, and work with ministers and civic leaders. His appointment was approved by the school board, city council, and county commissioners. He and his wife Lynne Walkup have five children, from West Point to kindergarten.
