Crystal Water mansion tale of Texas oil and ruins
The Crystal Water ranch near Pecos, built around 1912 by J C Trees for foreman Joe Levin and his wife, was a lavish three story home with a ballroom, large kitchen and bedrooms. Poor artesian water, heavy spending, a wooden Toyah Creek bridge, looting, and a 1959 fire ended the residence, leaving only a barn and surrounding oil activity.

The Nixon administration sold 803,526 tons of chrome ore to Metallurg Inc at 7.64 a ton, costing taxpayers 20 million as market prices stood around 35 a ton. Critics say stockpile reductions favored industry friends and shifted profits offshore while prices later rose to 38 46 a ton.
