The Senate passed a voice vote to commit the nation to the metric system. The Commerce Secretary is given 13 months to craft a plan converting pounds and yards to kilos and meters.
The Open Junior Rodeo sponsored by West Texas Junior Rodeo Association starts at Pecos rodeo grounds with events across age groups. Eight and under perform barrel flag and pole races. 9–12 compete in barrel goat tying breakaway steer riding. 13–19 in barrels flags poles and goat tying. Entry fees vary 5 to 10 dollars. Additional events for parents and additional shows scheduled at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday with ribbon and team roping, 8 p.m. performances also listed.
The Goodyear blimp Columbia will pass Pecos Saturday morning en route from Midland to Los Angeles. Officials set takeoff at 8 a.m. from Midland Odessa Airport with a Pecos crossing between 10:16 and 11 a.m. The blimp has toured since May 1, visiting Omaha and other cities, with Pecos residents among the early Goodyear club members.
Walter Van Clendenen a 30 year old Van Horn dentist sustained chest injuries when his westbound pickup collided with Ed ward Sullivan s truck on U S Highway 80 three miles east of Farm Road 2903 Toyah at 8 25 a m He was thrown against the steering wheel and taken to Reeves County Memorial Hospital by Pecos Ambulance Service with chest pain Attendants were Leo Elliott and Dirk Torsy according to Texas DPS investigating officer Russell Hill
A bicycle-riding gunman hijacked United Air Lines Flight 877 from Reno to demand 2 million dollars to aid disabled Vietnam War children. The three engine Boeing 727 landed at Vancouver International Airport after circling while FBI said the hijacker wanted to watch the money and equipment on the ground before any destination. He ordered passengers and three crew off and demanded a radio statement about ending the Vietnam war. The hijacker reportedly planned to use the cash in 20 and 50 dollar bills.
School officials announced this fall supply lists for Peco Barstow elementary by grade. Kindergarten items include crayons tissues pencils and a small supply box. First through sixth grade specify pencils crayons glue scissors rulers facial tissue and notebooks with variations for each level. Special education groups list two pencils crayons glue scissors erasers rulers notebooks and facial tissue plus maps and tablets where noted.
The Richard Briscoe Post 91 of the American Legion will hold its regular meeting at 8 p m on Monday at 9th and Cedar streets. Post commander is John Curcurato.
