Registration opens for Pecos schools on Aug 28
Registration for all Pecos schools from kindergarten to high school is scheduled for Monday August 28 with buses running and hours 8 30 a m to noon. High school students register locker assignments and fees August 16 25 by class, freshmen August 16 18, seniors 22 23, juniors 23 24, sophomores 24 25. Freshman orientation August 25 at 1 30 p m. Students must bring immunization records and birth certificates as required by Texas law including diphtheria tetanus polio smallpox measles rubella and pertussis vaccines for preschool children.

Weather warms as storms roll through West and Southeast Texas
Warm days return as heavy rains and scattered thunderstorms move across West Texas and the Upper Texas Coast. Pecos reached 94 with a 62 low and no precipitation. A waterspout near Crystal Beach prompted warnings for parts of Dimmit, Frio and La Salle counties while showers and fog occurred across East Texas and into Del Rio, Cotulla, Laredo and Eagle Pass.

Butz touts farm policy at Oklahoma luncheon
Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz urged Nixon farm policies and Bartlett's Senate bid at a 400-person farm luncheon in Enid Oklahoma. He praised current farm income but urged higher levels, warned against farm youth leaving, and touted a strong national food picture with 15.6 percent of disposable income spent on food. He projected a billion dollars in farm product sales to Russia this year, mainly wheat, and said trade must be reciprocal. He spoke at a $50-a-plate Republican dinner Tuesday night.

Gin employees take first aid course in Pecos area
Johnny Holub local manager for Community Public Service Co taught a two night eight hour multi media Red Cross first aid course to gin industry employees in the CBS Reddy Room. Fifteen attended from Pecos and nearby towns with a list of names. The course trains in artificial respiration stopping bleeding splinting and stretcher transfer. Holub and Bobby Self are Pecos instructors for this program.

Calves Killed as Cars Strike Herd on Highway 17
Six calves die and one is injured when a car driven by Gary Heath and a water tank truck driven by Henry Moody hit a herd crossing Highway 17 north of Stafford Boulevard at 6:17 am. The calves belonged to W. W. Hill and were pasture west of the road. No injuries to drivers. darkness blamed. no citations issued.

Huge farm sales to Russia seen
Enid Oklahoma AP reports Secre told a gathering of Oklahoma Republicans he foresees a billion dollars in sales of farm products to Russia this year. He said that will please farmers and help President Nixon. Butz spoke to about 400 Republicans at a $50 dinner.
Two Bids Sought for 1892 Eastham Depot
Eastham reports at least two bids have been received from Pecos and Odessa residents for the 1892 depot. the structure must be removed from the property. Abandoned depots and contents go to the highest bidder, though the depot remains closed and freight service continues on the line from Carlsband to Pecos, with offices in Clovis. The exact decision is not yet known, and most items remain in the Pecos depot except the safe and clock at Clovis. Anxious West of the Pecos Museum has offered to buy the furnishings.

Moroccan King narrowly escapes plot as defense chief dies
In Rabat, Defense Minister Mohammad Oufkir killed himself hours after rebels of the Moroccan air force failed to assassinate King Hassan I. The attack on the king’s jet, the Rabat airport, and the palace wounded several and killed others. Oufkir’s death follows a prior coup scare in 13 months. The king, unharmed, commanded a cautious landing and greeting of officials after the aerial assault.

The Agriculture Department extended the inspection window to 72 hours for veterinarians to certify livestock free of screwworms before shipping out of Southwest infested areas. Juvenile officer sees rising inquiries from parents

Wink lands new ceramic tile plant in Wink, Texas
