Spade Ranch founders built fruit and cattle empire near Payson
William Craig and Paul Vogel started the Spade Ranch on Webber Creek in the late 1800s. They developed orchards, a fruit processing plant, and a cattle herd that grew rapidly before Forest Service regulations and overgrazing altered the landscape. Now only stone walls and chimneys remain as wildlife reclaim the site.
