Donna Kestner was presented with the 2016 Rotarian of Excellence Award by 7150 District Governor Henry MacDonald at a Fulton Sunrise Rotary meeting. The award recognizes Service Above Self and committee Rotarians. The club meets at 7 am Fridays at Mimi's.
Oswego Harborfest announces multiple children workshops across Breitbeck Park East Park and Novelis Family Park West Park. Puppet Theater founders Potocnik and Mandigo lead a puppet-building session July 28 noon to 3 pm, Downbeat Percussion hosts July 29 noon to 1 pm, with shirt-making workshops July 27 3 4 pm and July 28 10 11 30 am.
Kimco Realty, owner of many Dunkin Donuts, sues Oswego city and Taco Bell developer Hospitality Syracuse over traffic concerns from a planned Taco Bell at 261 W Seneca St. The suit argues the planning boards failed to review traffic impact, requesting a restraining order. the judge denied it as no building permit filed yet. City officials say it’s a stall tactic and expect a final permit after state approvals.
BALDWINSVILLE The father of convicted murderer Steven Szatanek sues forensic pathologist Dr. Daniel Spitz of Michigan in Onondaga County Supreme Court for overcharging about 3000 plus more due to an invoice dispute. Szatanek was convicted in December of drowning Shove off Brennan Beach in Lake Ontario in 2014 and is serving 25 to life.
Fulton City School District seeks to open a school based health clinic at Fairgrieve Elementary to provide primary care for students pending state approval. The district will partner with NOCHSI to staff and fund the clinic entirely through insurance billing, addressing barriers to student health and learning.
Shipwreck explorers Jim Kennard and Roger Pawlowski located the Canadian schooner Royal Albert, sunk off Fair Haven Beach on August 9, 1868 while en route from Oswego to Toledo. High resolution sonar confirmed the wreck between Little and Big Sodus bays. the ship was ten years old at loss and owned by H C Bolland of Oswego who bought it for $10,000.
Oswego County officials move toward a full ban on tobacco and electronic smoking devices on county property. The Health Committee unanimously drafted a local law to replace 35-foot no smoking areas around county buildings. Health officials note Oswego ranks low in health behaviors with high adult smoking but show year-to-year improvement. Proud says the measure will lead by example and protect children.
