Congressmen John Katko introduces the SITSA Act to modernize the Controlled Substances Act and add synthetic drug analogues to Schedule A. The law would empower the Attorney General to temporarily or permanently schedule new substances and aid law enforcement in curbing importation and distribution amid rising Syracuse overdoses. Oswego County Leader Kevin Gardner notes synthetic drugs as a major local issue.
Oswego Common Council backs public space use along the lake and riverfront for the fifth annual Oswego Paddlefest planned for July 22. Organizers led by Jake Mulcahey and Crew Studios anticipate 800 plus paddlers with a festival setup at Wrights Landing Marina, Oswego Riverwalk and Veterans Stage from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. including food trucks and a concert.
Legislators debated a possible occupancy tax for lodging facilities with six or fewer units, currently exempt from 4 percent bed tax. A party line vote approved asking state lawmakers to amend tax law to apply the tax to smaller rentals, with Republicans arguing for a level playing field and Democrats warning of unfair burden on small businesses.
Bill Sloan drew on a then 96 year old New York combat veteran John Sidur of Cohoes as inspiration for Their Backs Against The Sea The Battle of Saipan and the Largest Banzai Attack of World War II The work from Da Capo Press chronicles the June 1944 to July 1945 campaign on Saipan with the 27th Infantry Division and Marine units fighting side by side amid heavy Japanese resistance Sidur helped save two hometown buddies during the biggest banzai assault near the end of the battle and Sloan credits him as the key influence behind the book.
