Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow announced that residents can now pay bills with credit and debit cards at City Hall. Initial vendor delays stalled rollout but the program is live in the City Chamberlain's Office with plans to expand to other offices and Wright's Landing Marina. A 1.75 percent credit and 1.25 percent debit fee apply.
The New York City Health Department reports the first of the season’s West Nile virus carrying mosquitoes found on Staten Island. No human cases were reported. Officials will spray to target breeding grounds if activity persists. West Nile can cause nausea and fever.
Oswego City School District announced a massive multiyear capital project titled the Community Marching Bucs and Athletic Improvement Plan. The plan will modernize seven district schools, upgrade Oswego High School theatre and music wings, and enhance athletics sites while the total cost remains undetermined. Superintendent Dr. Dean Goeney said the initiative aims to refresh music and athletic facilities and boost regional hosting capabilities.
About a dozen people gathered at Fort Ontario State Historic Site to mark World Refugee Day with the unveiling of an interpretive panel. The event recalls the 1944 refugee shelter established by FDR and the arrival of nearly 1,000 Jewish refugees. The panel was funded by a grant to the Friends of Fort Ontario and will inform thousands of visitors about the shelter’s history.
Albany lawmakers approved a 90 million flood relief package to aid homeowners businesses and communities along Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River. The Great Lakes Recovery and Mitigation Relief Act offers property tax relief and grants up to 100000 for flood damaged homes and businesses as Lake Ontario reached record high levels.
Oswego Zonta Club celebrated Billie Crandall Brady posthumously as 2017 Amelia Earhart Woman of Achievement at the 33rd Amelia Earhart recognition ceremony. Griffin Brady recalled her humor and fearlessness, noting she tirelessly served children and safety, earning broad praise from fellow Zontians.
