Ophelia Brings Zinc Load Through Oswego Amid Rough Seas
Maritime historian Richard Palmer recounts the German freighter Ophelia’s 1959 Oswego harbor voyage. Captain Luther Grabener steered through 45 to 50 mph winds and 12 to 15 foot waves to load 840 tons of zinc in three holds, plus a NATO bound army truck, with a 15 to 20 hour loading window and delays from Europe to Buffalo and Cleveland.
