Morningstar Residential Cafe hosts its annual resident and family Christmas Party with a festive feast and music by Double Vs. Administrator Andrea Doviak says residents and families look forward to the event and that it remains a special holiday highlight.
More than three dozen Upstate New York organizations will split $60 million in HUD funding to address homelessness. West New York and the Rochester Finger Lakes region receive $12 million each, with central New York getting $11 million. The grants aim to rapidly find housing and promote self sufficiency.
Oswego the city reports overtime expenditures dropped nearly 30 percent in 2016. After reviewing all departments, Oswego City Hall logged $950,169 year to date, down from about $1.3 million last year. The Department of Public Works and Oswego Police saw the largest reductions, about $180,000 less than 2015. Mayor Billy Barlow, both a former councilor and current mayor, says reining in overtime has been a year long priority.
Oswego City School District plans a 2017 tech push to expand student and family information access and teach digital citizenship. At Tuesday’s Board meeting Jamie Sykut was promoted to director of Instructional Technology, Network, Information and Media Systems to lead the effort. The move aims to align curriculum with a fast evolving information based economy.
Scriba residents may launch a townwide Neighborhood Watch in spring. Tom Battles, a 31 year veteran of the town highway department, proposed the plan after an incident near his truck. The town board voiced unanimous support and funds for about 10 signs at $20 each. Residents urged calling See NEIGHBORHOOD if they see suspicious activity.
President elect Donald Trump urged on Twitter that the United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability to deter threats, saying the world must come to its senses on nuclear weapons. He offered few specifics and spoke after meeting adviser Michael Flynn. His transition site notes awareness of catastrophic nuclear and cyber threats and a plan to modernize the arsenal as a deterrent.
