County Legislature OKs 2017 Budget With Zero Tax Increase
County lawmakers approve the 2017 budget using 2.5 million in fund balance to avoid raising the property tax cap. The plan comes in more than 400,000 under the cap, with foster care costs rising about 2.7 million and a second family court judge boosting expenses. Legislators will receive raises totaling nearly 10,000 across leadership roles, as a unanimous 25- member vote backs the package.

Legislature OKs raises for 3 elected officials
The legislature approved pay raises for three elected county officials amid debate over tying raises to terms rather than a fixed three year schedule. Lawmakers argued about legality and oversight while noting salaries are set for offices, not individuals. The vote was party line 19 to 6 with one dissent. Sheriff Reuel Todd, County Clerk Michael Backus, and Treasurer Fred Beardsley hold the offices.
