Two charged in explosion case in Tanzania
In Dar es Salaam a magistrate charged Egyptian Mustafa Mahmoud Said Ahmed and Tanzanian Rashid Saleh Hemed with 11 counts of murder over the Aug. 7 U.S. Embassy bombing that killed 11 Africans. Saleh, from Zanzibar, faced no bail as trial was scheduled for Oct. 5. Ahmed said he was not in Dar es Salaam that day.

Hurricane Georges battered the northeast Caribbean with 110 mph winds flooding roads toppling trees and forcing thousands from homes. Over 2000 sought shelter in U S Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as states of emergency were declared and National Guard activated. Governor Pedro Rossello called it the strongest Puerto Rico has faced in decades. Center was 75 miles east of St. Croix at 8 a.m moving west-northwest.

Ferry crew abandoned passengers as ship sank in storm
In Manila the Princess of the Orient ferry sank after a tropical storm. Police official Napoleon Sesante said crew gave no warnings or instructions to passengers as waves battered the vessel. At least 39 of 454 aboard died, 361 survived, 54 unaccounted for. Rescue operations continued off Cavite with ships and helicopters.
