A graveside service for Thurman Lowell Carter 74 of Ottawa who died September 18 1998 is set for 41 a.m. Monday at Hope Cemetery The Rev Francis Stockton will officiate He was born August 24 1924 in Eureka Kansas to Melvin and Sadie Carter He worked 26 years at First National Bank and many years at Fiian Feed Store He fished the Marais des Cygnes River for 72 years He was a member of St Paul AME Church He is survived by his son Robert Carter and wife Priscilla a sister Vivian Fulford two granddaughters Myranda and Taylor and a close friend June Lutz Memorials may go to Franklin County Cancer Foundation or Midland Hospice care of Dengel and Son Mortuary Ottawa.

Gorillas Killed by Poachers Hit Virunga Park

Poachers killed two rare mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park in eastern Congo on September 3. The African Wildlife Foundation called the deaths a devastating setback in the fight against extinction, noting a juvenile male and a three-year-old female were slain.

Minks Stolen Triggers Wide Hunt in England

About 7,000 minks were released at a breeding farm near Onneley in Staffordshire, with fewer than 1,000 escaping the compound. Many were found run over or shot as trappers and police urged residents to secure homes. An animal rights group claimed responsibility for the raid.

Princess of the Orient sinks off Fortune Island after storm

A passenger liner carrying 402 people sank before dawn near Fortune Island south of Manila. The Philippine navy reported 136 rescued, including 14 picked up by a fishing boat. Survivor Tomas Banton described waking to shouting as the vessel listed and sank after leaving Manila for Cebu City around 8 p.m. Friday. Navy officials said Sulpicio Lines reported loss of radio contact around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Chrysler Daimler merger backed by stockholders vote

Chrysler Corp shareholders in Wilmington endorsed forming a new DaimlerChrysler AG with Daimler-Benz AG of Germany. Daimler shareholders soon approved the combination. Eaton said the merger could become the No 1 transportation company, while many objected citing Germany’s WWI role. Daimler holders must exchange shares for the new firm’s stock.
