Pedal-Fest bicycle tour links to local trails

Ottawa and Garnett Friends of the Prairie Spirit Trail sponsor a Oct. 4 Pedal-Fest along rural Ander son and Franklin counties. Railroads ready for grain traffic but market weak says official

Kansas railroad spokesman Pat Hubbell told legislators that railroads have committed to more grain cars and stronger locomotives for heavy grain traffic. He cited sluggish overseas markets as the main issue this year, contrasting with last season’s bumper crops and ground storage of 32 million extra bushels. Hubbell urged not blaming railroads as piles grow but noted the market isn’t there.

Rail upgrade bill pins costs at fifty million plus

In Topeka the Transportation Secretary told the Special Committee on Rail Transportation that fixing Kansas short lines to safe and efficient operation could cost between 50 and 100 million dollars over ten years. He warned about 2,000 miles at risk without ongoing maintenance and noted a 3 million dollar revolving loan fund exists, with calls for more.
