Saving western Kansas water acquirers requires conservation
HARON SPRINGS AP William Mai settled in Wallace County during the Dust Bowl. In 1948 he drilled the first irrigation well in the Ogallala region, triggering a wave of wells as droughts pressed production. Now Mai's son Bill, 63, plans to switch 2000 acres to dryland farming, leaving some land fallow to conserve water while experts warn the Ogallala Aquifer faces depletion without careful planning.

They debate thawing in a warmer ice cellar and the DNA preservation needed for cloning, noting the mammoth’s natural habitat no longer exists and skepticism remains about viability within 15 to 20 years.
