A solemn ceremony marked the cutting of the 400 year old Liberty Tree on St. John’s College campus in Annapolis Maryland. Crews began removing the heavily decayed tulip poplar after irreparable damage from Hurricane Floyd. Wreaths were laid at the base of the venerable tree and its 100 year old offspring nearby.

Survived by wife Clara, two sons Karl and Bill, daughter Nancy, sister Norma Lutz, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Services in state today and Tuesday. Memorials to Eudora United Methodist Church or American Cancer Society.

President Clinton ordered the first federal study of prescription drug prices amid a multimillion-dollar pharmaceutical ad campaign. The White House says U S costs are higher than Canada and seeks to pressure Republicans over drug benefits in Medicare. The 90 day study will compare prices for common drugs for insured and uninsured seniors and analyze spending by age and income.
