State Might Keep Two Mansions For Governor
Kansas likely to retain Cedar Crest as a second executive mansion for a year or two while the 1889 old mansion at 801 Buchanan remains home for the Dockings and Halls. Cedar Crest has 12 rooms and 5,890 square feet, far back from the main road and needing remodeling to entertain large gatherings. It would require about $20,000 to redecorate and modernize, with even more potential costs if expanded for official functions.

Wage Dispute Slows Home Rebuilding
In Kansas City uncertainty over rebuilding tornado damaged homes grows as carpenters demand a 25 cent per hour wage raise from the Prayer Sons firm. J O Mack of the carpenters union says workers will not toil without the increase, which unions have sought since the March 31 contract expiry. Jack Bear of the Homebuilders Assn. warns higher wages will force owners to hire less competent contractors. Bear notes local firms normally perform 90 percent of area work and none has agreed to the raise.
