J C Paul A Barrier a 29 year old Jacksonville Florida resident surrendered after fatally shooting 2nd Lt Jerry Humphrey 22 Auburn Nebraska and Master Sergeant Ralph H Stilson 29 Flat Rock Michigan during a drill scene witnesses say Barrier loaded a rifle and fired after being censured by the lieutenant and the sergeant He was hospitalized for a mental exam and no charges were filed immediately Witnesses describe a tense confrontation inside a building as Barrier allegedly committed the killings then surrendered at the provost marshal's office.
A pilot from one of two jet planes crashed into the Atlantic near Jacksonville during Eisenhower's visit aboard the USS Saratoga. Cmdr. J. E. Tefft, commanding officer of Fighter Squadron 31, was rescued and described in good condition aboard the Valley Forge. The fate of the second pilot remained unconfirmed as search efforts continued.
WICHITA The Sunflower Boys State has named five members as nominees for delegates to Boys Nation in Washington DC next month. Winners in the balloting will be announced tomorrow the closing day of the weeklong citizenship training session run by the American Legion. David Crockett elected governor earlier in the week was nominated by the Boys State counselors. Nominated as leading citizens of their counties are Harry Lindquist Overland Park Bill Cozine Woody Thomson Wichita and Jim Brooks Liberal.
Franklin County wheat growers will vote on 1958 crop wheat marketing quotas June 20 announced by the Secretary of Agriculture. Russell Wray, chair of the Franklin County ASC, said polling places will be set up countywide for eligible voters. To participate, a farm must share in the 1958 wheat crop with more than 15 acres eligible for harvest or placed in the wheat acreage reserve. Voters will decide if marketing quotas are in effect and the level of price support.
Farm tractor pulled onto US50-59 four miles north of Ottawa causing a two vehicle collision at about 2 45 p m. Olin F Kelley 58 Humboldt said the tractor pulled into the highway forcing him to swerve and collide with a Kansas State Board of Agriculture car driven by Leslie Earle Durham 57 Hoyt. Minor damage to the state car's rear and major damage to the Kelley car front.
Four cases heard in Police Court this morning. Nathalee Jean Tucker, 30, Princeton, pleaded guilty to speeding 50 in a 30 zone. fined $30 and costs by Judge Milo Harris. Marion Earl Snodgrass, 32, RFD 1, pleaded not guilty to 40 in a 30 zone. released on $20 bond for trial June 15. Charles Michael Shaughnessy, 17, Willow, pleaded guilty to 39 in a 20 zone. fined $29 and costs by Judge Harris.
Willis J. Burchett of Fontana pleaded guilty in District Court to passing an insufficient fund check. Judge Floyd Coffman sentenced him to the Kansas Industrial Reformatory at Hutchinson for writing a $46.53 check at Crites Body Shop on March 27.
COFFEYVILLE The Kansas Annual Conference of the Methodist Church accepted its first woman minister, Rev. Laura Bradbury, as a member joining churches at LeRoy, Neosho Falls and Aliceville. She was licensed in 1942 and ordained in 1953. The conference also elected lay activity officers including Judge Floyd Coffman and Rev. Harry Ritter among others.
The first of eight free summer band concerts was presented last night in City Park. Soloists Larry Northway and Mary Pick enpaugh on trumpets and Jolene Brink on flute performed. Hymn Time featured the ministers favorites from Ottawa pastors Rev. Roger Fredrickson Rev. Robert Craig Rev. William Weber Rev. J. R. Smith and Rev. William Ward. Concerts continue Thursdays through June and July, with the July 4 show in Forest Park.
The Kansas Agri culture Business Industry Education tour sponsored by the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce Kansas State Teachers Association and state colleges will cover 2000 miles visiting 30 Kansas cities including Ottawa Salina Hays Garden City Pratt Hutchinson Wichita Independence Pittsburg Kansas City Lawrence Topeka Emporia Manhattan Abilene Russell Victoria Phillipsburg Colby Ulysses Dodge City Greensburg Medicine Lodge Newton Winfield Arkansas City Oswego Hutchinson Olathe and Ottawa. The group of 30 teachers travels in an air conditioned bus. Ottawa stop set for June 21 includes Bennett Creamery and Made O Day plant with a luncheon by the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce. The tour runs June 10 to 22.
