Many Changes In Store For Kansas Dairy Industry

Kansas dairy industry faces major shifts as herd numbers drop to record lows while per cow production rises due to better practices. Expect larger herds or greater labor efficiency, more labor saving equipment, extensive use of roughage, and higher yields per acre. Producers foresee higher fertilizer use, advanced weed and pest control, and broader adoption of artificial breeding with a goal of 10,000 pounds per cow in Kansas DHIA herds.

Legume Grass Meadows Benefit From Fertilizer Top-Dressing

Chicago reports the Middle West Soil Improvement Committee says legume grass meadows recover faster after the first hay cut with a good fertilizer top-dressing. It can boost hay per acre, cut dairy and beef feeding costs, improve profit per animal, and extend alfalfa life. Nutrient-rich top-dressings with phosphate and potash are advised after soil testing, typically 300 pounds per acre of phosphate-potash fertilizer such as 0-20-20 or 0-10-30. Dr J M MacGregor notes increased alfalfa yields and higher protein with fertilizer.
