The Naval Reserve Training Center in Lincoln announces two new enlisted programs for qualified youths aged 17 to 26 with at most one dependent. Enlistees choose either two years of active duty or up to ten months active duty plus training, with guaranteed Navy School and entry to Recruit Training within 120 days. Mrs. Tillman Joy and Mrs. Ervin Grossnicklaus attended a Royal Neighbors convention at Crete with companions Mrs. Esther Brown, Mrs. Eva Kelley, and Mrs. Nellie Kuhnel.
John Cerny, a longtime sports fan, used his experience to win the Armchair Quarterback Contest last week. He missed two entries, Columbus for Millard and Ord for Albion, earning a $5 merchandise certificate redeemable at participating stores.
Ron Christensen of Osceola has qualified for Kansas City Life Insurance Companys President's Club and received a personal invitation from president Joseph R. Bixby to attend the 1971 Presidents Club Seminar at the Sands Hotel Las Vegas Nevada October 5 to 8. Don Kreis entered the Veterans Hospital in Denver for heart surgery and Mrs. Bob Carey underwent major surgery at Emanuel Hospital in Omaha. Dr. Eklund was discharged from Bryan Memorial Hospital after major surgery on September 16.
Ak-Sar-Ben provided a $1,000 aid check to the Polk County Fair Osceola with half allotted for a grandstand roof and half for painting and improvements to portable stands. The program matches county fair funds and offers a $500 construction grant and a $500 spruce up grant, funded by the Ak-Sar-Ben race profits and state admission taxes.
Harry Van Hoosen of Stromsburg died after a lengthy illness at 91. Services were held in Stromsburg with burial at Hoffer Cemetery. Surviving wife and a daughter in Marshall Minnesota plus several grandchildren are listed. Al Kuhnel’s brother Louie Kuhnel died in Oroville California after surgery. funeral Monday with survivors including wife Lucille and children Earl Orville Neal Raymond and daughter Merna Moss. Lyman W Noyes, 74, died Sept 24 in Hollywood California. he is the brother in law of Mrs. R M McDonald.
About 700 farmers are expected for the annual Federal Land Bank stockholders meeting at Scotus Memorial Hall in Columbus Thursday evening September 30. The program includes a dinner at 7 00 pm, remarks by Association President Arnold P Fredrickson and James E Ludeman of the Federal Land Bank of Omaha, plus a panel on agricultural finance and credit outlook.
Osceola Pep Club to solicit funds from local businesses for the October 15 Homecoming parade floats and prizes. Theme titled Happiness is invites traditional floats or the walking floats first seen last year.
Daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Martin S. Jones honor their parents on their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday afternoon October 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Osceola Nebraska. Friends and relatives invited.
Danny Bond was elected president of the Junior Methodist Youth Fellowship at a Sunday meeting. Steve Johnston became vice president, Brad Lamb secretary, Sue Throckmorton treasurer, and Steve Peterson news reporter. Sponsors include Truman Bachenberg Mary Sterup and Louise Johnston. Plans announced for a car wash at Co-op Station and a hayrack ride on Oct 24. Refreshments were served by Jimmy Klein.
Osceola Volunteer Fire Department crews responded to two incidents recently. One Friday fire at the city dump burned trash and threatened a nearby field but was controlled before damage occurred. A Monday grass fire near the railway east of town was extinguished with no damage.
Osceola under Gary Workman edges Clarks 14-12 as senior Steve Tenniges stars with 111 rushing yards and a late 84 yard TD. Schultz racks 169 yards, Pollard intercepts, and Neujahr recovers onside. Defense, penalties, and ground attack shape the tight victory.
Charles McGimpsey spent the weekend at home with Mrs. Shirley McGimpsey and family. He is a student at Central Nebraska Technical College, Hastings. Barbara Potter, daughter of Mr and Mrs Luther Potter and a 71 OHS graduate, attended Platte College in the summer and is now enrolled at the University of Nebraska under the Lincoln General School of Nursing.
Donald L. Cole, brother of Mrs. Fern Baer, was named Master Chief Petty Officer in the Naval Reserve unit at Redding California. He serves as Senior Enlisted Advisor and Hospital Corpsman. His sons Larry D. and Dennis L. Cole follow his naval path. The unit has 70 enlisted men and 6 officers, drilling weekly from Mt. Shasta to Corning.
The Columbus area Creighton Club will hold its annual party on Wednesday October 13 at Johns nie s Cafe Schuyler. Attending university figures include Rev Carl Reinert S J VP University Relations Eddie Sutton Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach Chuck Maxwell Assistant Alumni Director. President James J Holmberg of Columbus Neb invites about 233 Creighton alumni in the Columbus area and invites Creighton student parents to attend. A social hour starts at 6 30 p.m. with dinner at 7 30 p.m.
Osceola Lions met Monday at noon on September 27 for dinner with ten members present. Mert Flodman will present plans to the County Commissioners for permanent flower boxes at the Court House. President Lee Draeger announced plans to reinstate noon programs featuring speakers from various fields.
The Ina Mangelsen farm was named 1971 Outstanding Conservation Farm of Polk County. Mr and Mrs Victor Mangelsen of Osceola were honored at a Lincoln Nebraska banquet on September 13 with Polk County officials and sponsors presenting a 16 by 8 inch color aerial photo of the farm at a fall banquet.
Mr and Mrs Ivan Flowers relocate to the former Ernest Nyquist house in southwest Osceola. Mr and Mrs Dean Buffington reside at the Neva Liedloff dwelling during remodeling. Mr and Mrs Rodger Wright move into the Buffington house west of the former lumber yard. Bulldog Booster Club meets Wednesday Sept 29 at 8 pm at the City Cafe. parents and sports fans urged to attend.
Former OHS majorette April Walgren marches again as a lettergirl with Nebraska Wesleyan Pride of the Plainsman band. She led the NWU squad during Saturday’s parade at the NWU Missouri Western game in St. Joseph, Missouri, alongside Linda Thayer of Sidney and relatives from Osceola.
