Bradlee Johnson, son of Donald and (Mrs.) Johnson of Osceola, serves as counselor for the High School Equivalency Program. HEP, one of ten foundation projects, aids migrant youth to complete high school education via GED. The foundation plans a lake southeast of Lincoln to fund recreational facilities and foster closer community ties.
The Cub Scout Pack met on Wednesday September 29 at the Scout cabin. Randy Linenemann and Tim Hofbauer were sworn in by Cubmaster Bob Grossnicklaus. Norman Hofbauer becomes Den II Mother and Nor man Hofbauer is named Cubmaster. Retiring Secretary Mrs Keith Miller becomes assistant Den Mother, Mrs Harold Davis is new Secretary and Mr Davis leads Webelos I. Bear badges earned by Den J Joe Graham Michael Voe lik Bobby Grossnicklaus Paul Hennings Steven Davis John Miller Jimmy Mangelsen advancing to Webelos. Fire calls reported at Ryan Barber Shop and City Dump with no major damage.
Miss Ethel Diedricksen will headline the Polk County Extension Club Achievement Day on Monday October 11 at 2 p.m. in the new Legion Club in Shelby. Leaders will be honored, new officers installed, and county clubs will display lesson products. All women are welcome. refreshments and door prizes follow.
George Cemper cashier of the First National Bank of Shelby was elected president of Group 2 of the Nebraska Bankers Association at the Groups Annual Meeting in Columbus. Group 2 is one of six regional divisions of the association for Nebraska.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce invites community help for its centennial in June 1972. Funds are needed for a grand anniversary observance and a Cake Walk is set for Homecoming on October 15. Bakers may bring cakes to Polk-Butler Insurance on Friday October 15.
Navy Petty Officer Third Class Alex Kufeldt reported for duty at the U S Naval Communications Station San Miguel Philippines. While serving at the 2100 acre post he may visit Hong Kong Japan and other parts of the Philippines.
Osceola markets show wheat at 8.126 and oats around 0.70 with beans near 2.83 and Milo at 1.56. Milo harvest is underway with grain quality improved though yields not yet determinable.
Osceola Bulldogs edge St Edward 24 13 as wind hampers punting and offense. Mark Tonniges leads rush 100 yards while Colin Mc Keag drafts 46 receiving yards and a TD. Chris Hayes throws 9 of 16 for 80 yards and 2 TDs. Tom Peterson adds a TD on 32 rushing yards and 13 receiving yards.
Osceola High School Principal Ken Sipes announces that three seniors Linda Johnson Becky McDonald and Sally Mills received Letters of Commendation for high performance on the 1971 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. They are among 35000 U.S. students in the top 2 percent of expected graduates in 1972, ranking just below the 15000 Semifinalists named in September by the NMSC.
Army Chief Warrant Officer Gerald K. Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Delmer D Johnson, received the Nam badge for his service in Vietnam. He is a staff maintenance officer with the US Army Strategic Communications Command in Vietnam near Long Binh after joining the army in 1954 and postings at Fort Meade Maryland. His wife Jeannine resides at 908 Hillcrest Drive Vienna Virginia.
Itinerant interviewer A. Barnes from the Nebraska Department of Labor will be at the Polk County Welfare Office in Osceola on October 12 from 1 30 p m to gather job data and assist residents with unemployment issues.
Osceola's Tom Rodene edged Lester Anderson to win this week's Armchair Quarterback contest by nearly matching Army Missouri game picks. He also came closest on Nebraska rushing yards to claim a $5 merchandise certificate to be picked up at the Record office.
The Osceola Midget team lost 16 to 0 in a Wednesday game versus St Marys with David City St Marys junior high. The defense worked hard but the offense struggled. Upcoming games include Columbus Scotus on Tuesday and Stromsburg at 7:30 Monday at the Osceola field.
Jeanette Wagner daughter of Mr and Mrs Raymond Wagner and April Walgren daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Walgren of Osceola have been selected as members of two Nebraska Wesleyan Choirs. Walgren will sing with the A Cappella Choir and Wagner with the University Choir. Both groups perform at the Christmas Choral Concert December 5 at the NWU Fine Arts Center.
Janet Urban was installed as president of the American Legion Junior Auxiliary at a Sept. 3 meeting at the Legion clubrooms. Co leaders Milan Snodgrass and Harlan Rowan helped organize the group formed last spring. Officers include Connie Urban vice president Becky McDonald Karen Johnson historian Jackie Rowan chaplain and secretary treasurer. Meetings set for 4 p.m. first Monday monthly at the Legion Club rooms.
P C Theatron presents a touring and resident production of Hansel and Gretel in October aimed at area elementary schools. Confirmed dates include October 18 at Stromsburg and Osceola Public Schools. No admission charge. Directed by Dick Averett with a cast including Dan Gaskin Fremont and Jackie Stavas Columbus.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation approves a two year accreditation for Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital after field surveys by George E. Farrar Jr. and Linda L. Slothower. It commends the hospital staff doctors and board of trustees for maintaining patient care standards and safety as the primary objective. The hospital was first accredited in October 1967 and has met standards in every survey since.
The Polk County Historical Society will sponsor a Thursday bus tour to Lincoln on Oct. 14 visiting William Jennings Bryan home Union College Press and the Kinnard home. Bus departs Stromsburg Hotel at 8 a.m. returns at 5 p.m. Tickets from Doris Grossnicklaus Osceola or Mildred Flodman Stromsburg by Oct. 10. Five Polk County 4 Hers exhibited at Ak Sar Ben in Omaha Sept 24 to Oct 2 including Debbie Creech Mark Rosenquist Randy Hullinger Tony Hullinger and Robin Flodman with ribbons and sale prices noted.
