Polk County Extension News Highlights and 1949 Plans

The Polk County Crop Improvement Association’s fall meeting is set for September 30 at 8:00 p.m. in the 4-H Building, with program planning and farm service topics on the agenda. Gloria Ann Jones becomes extension office assistant October 1 after selection by the Extension Board. 4-H AkSarBen show to be more compact with 1303 beef entries, 49 counties represented by four youth entrants.

Project clubs hold trainer meetings

Two trainer meetings for Project Clubs were held the past week. One at the Home Economic Laboratory of Stromsburg High School and the other at the Extension Office in Osceola. Color in the Home is the project to be enjoyed for the October and November meetings. The demonstrations will guide color choices for the home and train the eye to see color difference.

Osceola Defeats Stromsburg 2-0 In Narrow Friday Victory

Osceola Bulldogs edge Stromsburg 2 to 0 as a safety in the second half proves decisive. Lee Adams kicked and Brazee blocked a punt near the Stromsburg five, with Husak and Bryan smothering the return. Marlin Nelson forced a fumble and Bob Johansen delivered a gutsy tackle as Osceola's defense dominates.

New Clerk at County Extension Office

Miss Gloria Ann Jones is named the new clerk at the County Extension Office replacing Sally Brigham Johansen who resigned after nearly three years. Jones is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Martin Jones of Swede Home and is a Osceola high school graduate from last spring.

Howell Glass Blowers to Perform in Osceola October 7

Mr and Mrs R M Howell Jr members of a renowned glass blowing family will give a Bohemian glass blowing demonstration at the Osceola Auditorium on Thursday October 7 at 3 00 pm A public program with a nominal fee. Leonard Grossnicklaus a 33 year old rancher from Bartlett Nebraska died in a light airplane crash six miles southwest of O Neill. Foggy conditions prevented witnesses though nearby residents heard the impact at about 8 am. He was en route to O Neill airport for a fishing trip and his funeral was held at Bartlett with family members from Osceola nearby. PMID

DeKalb Demonstration Plot Wins in North Central Nebraska

The DeKalb Demonstration plot sponsored by DeKalb Hybrid Seed corn dealers won first place among 18 Nebraska counties. Lynn Brigham Shelby Stanley Harless of Gresham and S J Harless of Polk led the 17-variety plot on Albert F Anderson farm east of Osceola. A field day with free lunch runs Friday from 2 to 4 pm at the plot.

Fall Bazaar and Festival at Methodist Church Osceola

The Fall Bazaar and Festival at the Methodist Church in Osceola will be held on Wednesday October 6. Omaha market shows fat cattle mostly 50c to $1.00 lower despite a Tuesday top of 40.25 for 1 838 pounders from Cuming county. Cows down slightly, stockers and feeders weak by 25c, hogs off 1.00 to 1.50, slaughter hogs 23.50 to 28.75, fat lambs up 25c to 26.00, feeding lambs 21.50 to 24.00, breeding ewes to 11.50. Eighth graders tour Lincoln on annual school trip
