Two brothers Clyde and Paul Ruch of Haxtun Colorado who enlisted early in the war recently met in Sicily where they are serving. They are sons of Clyde Ruch of Haxtun formerly of Polk.
Three Stromsburg youths were injured Sunday when their car collided with a stock truck from Hampton on the Stromsburg Polk highway. Stanley Larson, treated for minor injuries, was discharged that evening. Dale and Gaylord Johnson remained patients, Gaylord not awake as week began.
Emiel DeBaets, 23, Shelby, is home for a three week furlough with his parents. A Liberator bomber tail gunner in the Middle East, he completed 34 bombing missions including Rome raids and the Ploesti refinery assault. He entered the army June 15, 1942 and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal.
The Greens Chapel Jolly Workers Extension Club will meet September 6 at the home of Mrs. Keith Kindberg with Mrs. Fleetwood and Mrs. Berggren as entertainers. Relatives note the graduation of Quinten Torres as a pilot on October 1. Various locals visited, traveled, or hosted events in the area including trips to Brooksfield, Rochester, and St Paul, with numerous family and church members mentioned.
Mrs W E Kinney and Wallace returned home Friday from Omaha where they spent four days visiting relatives and Kinney attended the National American Legion Convention. Mr and Mrs Louis Daum and family returned to Fremont after a week visiting Shelby relatives and land interests south of Shelby. John Scholz came to Shelby on Thursday for a sixteen day furlough with his mother and relatives. He arrived from North Carolina where he was transferred after two years in the army with time in Panama and South America. Mrs C A Anderson returned home after a two week Omaha visit with her sister. Mrs Sarrow returned to Silver Creek after a few days in Shelby with her sister Mrs Emmett Beebe. Miss Hellen Moon of Kearney and Mr and Mrs Glen Moon and their Omaha son visited Shelby at the Moon home.
District No. 18 residents Lou Seiz and companions visited Adolph Bernt in Bellwood on Tuesday. Mrs. Fred Hecker socialized in Council Bluffs over the weekend. Mrs. H A Johansen Grace and Mrs. Ralph Hasselbalch with Betty headed to Lincoln for a day trip. Frank Lassek Leo returned from Omaha after visiting relatives. Chas Tragart and Phil Micek visited the Stanley Galus home in Omaha. Pvt Edmund Lassek left Camp Hahn California after a visit from parents. Ralph Hasselbalch joined Phil Micek for a Primrose day trip. Sunday visitors at Carl Benda’s included Tom Micek, Edward Lisko, John Micek and Phil. Adolph Bernt enjoyed a long fishing trip in western Nebraska last week.
The Polk County quota for corn pickers faces a tough task as the Farm Machinery Rations Board reviews 102 applications. They weigh acres harvested, custom work, and family manpower to spread pickers across the county. few have arrived at dealers but are expected soon.
Effective October 4 1943 ceiling prices take effect for hogs with the Omaha limit set at 14.45 dollars per hundredweight. The notice specifies the city level ceiling to standardize pricing across regulated meat markets.
The AAA office has been busy rationing the fourth quarter allotment of gas to truck owners in Polk County. Reader notes 185 commercial trucks, over 300 farm trucks, and 13 local trucks operate in the area.
The 27 Polk County precinct committeemen are called to a meeting on October 7 to discuss the 1943 farm compliance and the 1944 farm program. In the afternoon they will review and approve farmers reports of compliance for the 1943 conservation payment. Eiler H. Svendsen of Nuckolls County, the new AAA fieldman for ten counties and the AAA County Committee, will be in general charge.
R L Mackerang departs Friday for Fort Leavenworth to be inducted into the army. He is the son in law of Mr and Mrs R K E Nelson. Herbert Olson leaves for Fort Leavenworth and Mrs Olson returns from Omaha after a visit with his brother and family. Jack Christensen heads to army this week after visits with H Christensen. Mavis Hultquist visits York relatives and accompanies her parents home. Sven Sundberg, son of Mr and Mrs George A Sundberg, North Ridge California, was killed by a train near his home on Friday September 22 as reported to his aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs P W Anderson.
Frank Langhammer ssr entered hospital last Thursday for treatment. Charles Huggler son of Mr and Mrs Fred Huggler had his tonsils removed Wednesday morning. Privates Joe Olosyziski and James Banks of Fairmont air base were brought in after an auto accident near Osceola last Wednesday. Mrs Marion Thomas and infant son were dismissed today. Mrs Moser Mrs Gabel and Mrs Cornell were released over the weekend.
Miss Dollie Lockard of Lincoln visited with Mr and Mrs John Lockard over the weekend. Mr and Mrs William Brandt Jr visit in southern Missouri with relatives. Mr and Mrs W A Atkinson, Stromsburg, and Mrs Floyd West visited the J A Thompson home Sunday afternoon. Old English Wax it wears longer 39c a pint at Crouse Tex Drug Co.
With corn picking season near, the Farm Labor Committee schedules a wage discussion for Oct 1 at 8:00 p m in the Osceola courthouse. It will compare scales from other counties and consider per acre charges for mechanical harvesting. All farmers and labor organizers are invited to attend the meeting. The Polk County Extension Service will assist in providing extra labor.
The Osceola Bull Dogs and Silver Creek fought to a 6-6 draw as time dwindled. Wayne Parke returned a fumble 45 yards for a late touchdown and Bill Norton, James Chantry, Wayne Parks, and Stanley Braithwait stood out for their respective roles.
Family and friends gathered Friday for the funeral of Gertrude Walford of Gresham. Relatives present included Mr and Mrs Herman Richter Mrs Lottie Graff and others. Community notes mention the Home Study Club meeting held Tuesday at Ethel Heckman’s near Osceola and upcoming project leaders Edith Hiemer and Josephine Hopwood.

Three soldiers connected with Fairmont air base were treated at Shelby hospital after their car, stolen from a York defense worker, failed to make a turn west of Osceola last Wednesday night. Officials said the men were intoxicated when found and the car was badly damaged. They were later released to army authorities.
