Leo Oliva reports the Nantucket taughtship was struck by Edna on Saturday. All crew survived but sustained shock and injuries. A prior local hurricane two weeks earlier caused more severe damage. Saline County awaits a public instruction superintendent as election petition deadlines approach.
Horses ride over and cars knevel over the oiled tennis surface to destroy the court. When caught, legal action will follow. A watermelon patch near town owned by Joe Bruhn was raided with melons taken or destroyed by unknown culprits in a jeep.
Erwin Dreuppel age 24 of Columbus died after a Saturday night head on crash involving two cars. His wife Mrs Dreuppel suffered compound fractures of both legs. The other driver Melvin Headfee of Omaha had head and chest injuries and was being pursued by a state patrolman who said Headlee exceeded the speed limit at the time of the accident.
Monday evening September 13 marked the official start of the new sewer disposal plant operation. Many homes are now being connected to the sewer system where hookups were previously unavailable, as reported by the Stromsburg Headlight.

Walter Nyberg, 60, died Monday evening of a heart attack while chasing hogs that had escaped their pen. Survived by his wife and eleven children, the Polk County man’s home lies about 1.5 miles east and 2.5 miles north of Polk.
Osceola hosts Homecoming on Friday September 24 with a 2:30 parade from the school to the square featuring floats bands and class reps. St Paul joins for an 8:00 p m football game the crowning of the queen and captain will occur at halftime.
Five Polk County seniors in 1954 earned University of Nebraska Freshman Scholarships for 1954 55. Winners include Willard J. McKeag and Richard L. Randall Osceola Kenneth L Bowers Allen Ziegelbein Polk Marilyn K Stauber Stromsburg. The $100 awards were based on fall exams by Nebraska high school seniors.
Stromsburg opened with a clean 13-0 win over Osceola in Friday night football. Osceola threatened deep in Stromsburg territory but stalled near the four yard line. The first TD came on a right flat pass and the second on a left end sweep with the extra point good. Osceola hosts St. Paul next, during homecoming week with a float parade and queen coronation at halftime. kickoff is 8:00.
The ASC County Convention is scheduled for September 27 1954 at 9:00 am to elect a county committee for the 1955 program year. Nine delegates from Polk County precincts, elected by farmers via mail ballot, will attend. Three committee members and two alternates will be chosen, with full results to be published later. Cross compliance remains a condition of price support, except wheat up to 15 acres is exempt.
The National Safety Council awarded its Merit Award to Consumers Public Power District for its 1953 safety record. A letter from NSC president Ned H. Dearborn commended a 53 percent improvement in accident frequency and a 92 percent improvement in accident severity, based on NSC par rates for electric utilities.

Two traffic accidents occurred within minutes of each other in Polk county on Monday evening. A car truck collision west of Shelby involved John L. Latenser Jr. and Darwin DeTurk with minor truck damage and a total loss for the Latenser car. A second crash near Swede Home on a gravel road involved Emil Rosno driving Alfonso Rosno’s car and Jack Laws driving a brother’s car, both sustaining minor injuries and about 500 dollars in damage to each vehicle.

Osceola school officials welcomed parents Tuesday night at the district open house. Attendees met faculty, toured rooms and departments, and refreshments were served by the school board members and their wives.
Following practice last Thursday evening the Methodist choir honored Sandra Schumann Hansen with a one gift shower. Refreshments were served to 25 members present.
Repair work on the city water tower finished early this week. The interior was cleaned and pitted spots repaired, two coats of paint applied, and a new top installed to prevent dust or foreign matter. The tower was left empty to dry before refilling, marking the first repair in about 14 years.
The 1954 Republican Caravan will arrive in Osceola at noon Friday for a luncheon at the Legion Building. Tickets are available from Oscar Boden, R. R. Cox or Phil B. Campbell. After lunch, candidates including Curtis, Hruska, Abel, Victor E. Anderson, R. D. Harrison, and others will speak from the street before the caravan moves on to Wahoo Ashland and Lincoln.
