Cpl Ralph E Rhoades, son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Rhodes, recently spent seven days in Japan on rest and recuperation from the 8173d Army Unit in Korea. He is a crane operator with the Engineer Utility Company, entering the Army in January 1953.

Polk Woman Dies After Illness at Local Hospital
Mrs. E. W. Hahn, 80, died Friday evening after a two week illness at Central City hospital. She was the oldest member of Emanuel Lutheran Church Polk and had lived in the community about 75 years. Funeral services were held Monday at the church with interment in the Lutheran cemetery. Born in Bloomfield Iowa she spent most of her life in Polk.

Zentz Birthday Anniversary Party Held After School

The Red Cross Blood Bank collected 91 pints during the blood mobile stop in Osceola last Friday September 10. Of 102 volunteers, eleven were rejected about 11 percent—below prior rejections and polio scare may have reduced donors.

Six Polio Cases In Osceola Now In Three Families
Six polio cases in Osceola have been recorded in three families after four new victims last week. The first patient Mary Ellen Nyberg is home after a month at Grand Island with braces needed on both legs. The others remain at Grand Island except possible discharge for one or two within a week. Dickie Bennett, eight, is in serious condition. his sister Barbara, cousins Michael and Russell, and neighbor Lloyd Fjell also occurred. Fjell’s condition improved and discharge may come within a week if progress continues. The two Cole children remain serious. Five of the six cases are neighbors in north Osceola.

County Co-ops Host Barbecue for About 900 Attendees
The Polk County Co-ops held their annual barbecue supper at the Shelby Parish Hall Tuesday night with about 900 people present as eleven co-ops joined in the event. Gale Anderson of the co op council of Lincoln gave the main address with prizes films and talks highlighting the program. Martin Jones, president of the county council, presided and introduced the speakers.
