A major blaze at A. J. Herrmanns farm four miles northeast of Osceola destroyed the barn, hay, and straw pile. Four calves died. cows and young stock were removed. Firefighters arrived late as the hay loft fire spread. cause possibly spontaneous combustion or an electric spark. The barn insured for about $1100, hay covered by insurance, other buildings spared.
In the County Court of Polk County Nebraska creditors are notified that claims must be presented by January 3 1925 and debts paid by October 1925. The county judge will hold sessions October 3 1924 November 3 1924 and January 3 1925 at 10 pm to receive examine hear allow or adjust claims. Dated September 2 1924 F H Ball County Judge.
Mr and Mrs Simon Thompson visited Grand Island Friday. Miss Pauline Presson travels to Lincoln to enter state university. Carla Lindquist loses cows from green corn. Rev Lindquist conducts funeral at Sumner. Mission church host to Rev Anderson speaking Sunday. Several residents travel for conferences and duties. New clerk Gaylord Hanson arrives at Thompson store. Building work on E Erickson home underway. Duck season activity reported near Benedict. Fire truck from Stromsburg to Osceola region. Various visits, trips, and social events noted across the area.
W. Roy Van Hoosen sheriff announces a foreclosure sale of an undivided one fifth interest in the south half of the northeast quarter section thirteen township fourteen north range one west Sixth P M in Polk County Nebraska. The sale, to satisfy a decree from July 28 1924 for 1459.75 dollars plus costs, will be held October 6 1924 at 10 a m in Osceola courthouse yard. Public notice dated September 4 1924 with dates Sept 4 11 18 25 Oct 2.
By order of the Clerk of the District Court Polk County Nebraska the sheriff will sell at public auction at the south door of the county courthouse Osceola on September 22 1924 at 2 o clock the north 116 feet of Lot 9 Block 6 original Osceola Nebraska described lands and tenements to satisfy a judgment in the Cassius M Pulver vs W O Johnson Company and Frank H Wood land case. Sheriff W Roy Van Hoosen Deputy Clyde Courtney. August 21 28 September 4 11 18 1924.
James Lee of Daytons Ohio and Mrs. J. Parsons of York spent the weekend with W. A. Coffendaffer and family. Mr. and Mrs. Wilber Bennett of Shelby were Sunday visitors in the Coffendaffer home.
Mrs J Van Hoosen was an Omaha passenger, Monday morning, according to a brief item in the local column.
After the morning service at the Presbyterian church the congregation moved to the basement for a fried chicken dinner served by the church ladies. About a hundred were served with mashed potatoes gravy rolls and other trimmings. A short service followed with songs instrumental music and talks on church work.
R W Dunkle owns a new Essex coach bought from Homer Phelps. Mrs Martin Aden has a successful operation at Shelby hospital. Numerous visits and trips occur among local families to Omaha Grand Island Lincoln and Columbus. Births include several sons and a daughter. The U B conference returns Rev G T Lavery to Shelly charge for another year. The Reece garage reports several car sales and a social surprise honors Luie Hastert. Continued on page 4.
Catherine Maria Rahe Fozzard born April 6 1848 in Cass county Illinois died September 12 1924 at her home northeast of She by Nebr aged 76 years six months. Married Edward Fozzard October 26 1870 they had nine children four sons survive John Thomas Lewis Frank and three others died in infancy. The family moved from Nebraska to Polk and Butler counties where they lived most of their life. She was a member of the Presbyterian and later United Brethren churches. Funeral services were held September 15 1924 at the family home conducted by Rev G T Savery with burial at Pleasant View Cemetery near Rising City beside other family. Neighbors served as pallbearers and Shelby Male Quartette provided music.
Martha Elmira Scott was born March 22, 1849 in Columbiana County Ohio and died August 30, 1924 at Bea trice Nebraska at age 75. She moved with her parents to Owen County Indiana as a child and married Joseph Miller in 1871. The couple lived in Missouri before homesteading in Polk County Nebraska and settling in Beatrice in 1898. A faithful Methodist and member of the Woman's Relief Corps, she leaves an only daughter Mrs. M. H. Guiles and a brother J. N. Scott of Hawthorne California. Her husband preceded her in death about eleven years earlier.
Wednesday singles saw Ray Peterson Polk take first with A C Johnson Stromsburg second and E G Burke Stomsburg third. Doubles crowned Wm Herrmann and Ray Peterson first, Louis Herrmann and M R Johnson second, and A C Johnson with E G Burke third. Friday doubles lined up M R Johnson Osceola first and Ray Peterson Polk second with Carl Schleuter Gresham third.
The author thanks neighbors and friends who helped save buildings and property from fire Tuesday evening. Henry G Herrmann arrived from Arcadia California for a visit with relatives and plans a week long stays visiting friends before returning home.
Hon C Peturs Peterson of Lincoln spoke at the county courthouse rally praising the Republican campaign. Delegations from Polk and Stromsburg attended and heard attacks on La Follette’s third party stance against the supreme court, framed as a key campaign issue. N L Nelson named permanent chairman, with A B Hed bloom and Miss Ethel Blake in leadership roles. An executive board was formed from two members per precinct.
Mr and Mrs George Bond celebrated their 25th anniversary in the city Sunday with about two score relatives and friends in attendance. Immediate relatives included Mr and Mrs O M Bond of Gresham and uncle H L Bond of the city. eight Bond siblings attended with families, and several aunts uncles and cousins joined the gathering. The Bonds have three children Raymond Paul and Ruth all present, with Raymond now farming Hackberry precinct home place. the couple owns a fine southeast city home and are regarded as leading citizens as well as the Record extends best wishes.
The Womans Club hosted a reception for new members at Mrs. F. D. Mills home. Mr and Mrs Wm Merrick visited their daughters in Burke S D and Manawa Neb. The World Herald featured the Jacobson family of Stromsburg. NBBC Club members enjoyed an afternoon with Mrs Luther Lindquist and a social lunch. Sheriff Van Hoosen detains a no fund check writer at the county hotel. Oscar Olson of Hordville is the latest guest. Mrs Martha Davis arrived from Omaha for a brief visit and Ruth Herrmann returns from Alton Ill. Davis named election clerk for her ward again. J S Curren and family returned from Bridgeport and plan Palmer visit after a failed ranch deal left Curren unemployed.

A long list of residents and visitors appears in Osceola notes. Mrs J Van Vlack and Miss Essa Avery travel between cities. many attend Omaha Lincoln and Lincoln areas for visits operations or school. Families, relatives, and locals visit, move, or return from trips, fairs, or medical events around Polk County with occasional notes on operations and public figures.
The Polk county board met in adjourned session with all members present. A petition asked grading of a road from east end of Park Avenue Polk to Meridian highway, but no action was taken. Claims totaling hundreds of dollars were approved for various individuals and funds including road and bridge work, supplies, and an Osceola Record item. The board inspected road and bridge work in the afternoon and adjourned to meet in October.
Rev J A Klein and family will move to Lincoln next week where he has accepted the pastorate of the Second Methodist church at 16th and M Streets near the capitol. He succeeds Rev Samuel Buechner, who becomes district superintendent, as Rev Matthew Herrmann departs to Enterprise Kansas. Klein will be replaced here by Rev W C George of Clatonia, a former Aurors citizen, and leaves with friends who praise his long faithful work.
Nebr Gas & Electric Co. announces a national essay contest on better lighting. Local winners advance to district and national rounds. top prize is a $15,000 energy efficient home. Sponsored by Centennial Gas & Electric Co. and manager H S Latsch, with prizes for educational outreach to families.
Duncan the Produce Buyer reports cattle and hog buying notes. Judge Ball returned from Lincoln after a short visit. Leon Merrick visited the state capitol this week, returning Tuesday. Mrs Frank Leibee went home at Bradshaw Tuesday night after visiting Osceola. C A Pike left for Wheatland Wyoming after a two week Osceola visit. Pike farms irrigated land near Wheatland raising grain and sugar beets and finds the area decent.
