Lewis Dunn son of Mr and Mrs Calmar Dunn of the valley enlisted in the United States Coast Guard on May 4 1942. He serves on shore patrol at Ten Pound Island near Gloucester Massachusetts and is a graduate of Osceola High School class of 1936.
Polk County Extension Service presents a radio program on poultry flock management over KMMJ Grand Island on September 19 at 11 05 a m. Speakers include Mrs Rex Brigham Doris Brigham of Shelby and County Extension Agent Ray L Cruise.
Herman A. Jones of the Polk County AAA Committee notes 890 crop insurance applications were signed before the August 31 closing date. He says this shows farmers still seek protection despite high wheat yields, even though the total does not set a new record.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service met at the parsonage in Shelby while church aid gathered Friday. Morris Simons returned from an army camp in Kansas for a brief furlough. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Weeden moved from Grand Island to Hastings. 4-H members visiting the State Fair earned blue ribbons.

W. O. Hansen traveled to Columbus Sunday to join veterans at the annual reunion of the 355th Infantry from World War I.
Osceola city tax sale Tuesday afternoon sold 15 parcels for delinquent taxes. City purchases ranged from $20 to $250, with Edd y Wagner taking the Chevrolet garage for $901, John G. Carlson buying the Samuelson property for $400, and Wes Koehler paying $155 for the Schwab acreage in Morningside.
September 3 1942 marked the fiftieth anniversary of G T Ray as a member of the Masonic Fraternity. Osceola Masonic Lodge honored him at their last meeting with a fifty year emblem presented by Past Master W W Norton. Ray spoke about early lodge experiences and refreshments were served afterward.
County and community committeemen votes occur September 18 and 19 1942. Farmers and spouses enrolled in Agricultural Adjustment Agency programs may vote and hold office. No proxy or mail voting. Delegates and committee elections at 8 p m September 18 in precincts including Canada Strain’s Hall Clear Creek Hackberry Island Osceola Platte Pleasant Home Stromsburg Valley.
The Osceola Woman's Club began its year with a pot luck supper at the Methodist church parlor. About thirty attendees included new members, friends, Osceola schools faculty, and the girls’ high school quartet plus Mrs. D W McFadden in vocal solos. The club’s Membership Drive continues as officers elected last spring lead the year.
Victor Fornander, born March 10 1850 in Kalmar län Sweden, died September 11 at age 92 in Osceola Nebraska. He married Anna Runquist in 1897 and leaves daughter Mrs Roy Cox, sisters Sophia Johnson and O P Jones, brother Axel E Carlson, plus other relatives. Funeral services were held at St Pauls Lutheran Church with Rev Everett L Bexell. interment in the Fernander family plot.

Gien Buchta and Alan Deeter of Osceola won first place with a 4-H Livestock Loss Prevention demonstration at the State Fair. Alan and Glen Buchta will face teams from Iowa and South Dakota in a District Contest October 8 in Omaha. The Polk County 4-H Livestock Judging team placed fifth among 38 county teams. Raymond Schott was 5th individually.
Mr and Mrs Dan Hayes attended his uncle's funeral in Fremont after visiting Omaha. Carol Buchta plans a two week stay with parents before returning to Denver for work. Mr and Mrs Dake with guests Ted Swanson and two Misses attended the State Fair in Lincoln. Junior McCormick and Verlin Johnson visited from Omaha. LaVerne Dake stayed with John Young's in Fullerton. Rex returned to grandparents the Dakes. Ladies Aid and Happy Hour Club plan Friday hall cleaning. Lawrence Bryan and Cedric Fineey joined the Lincoln State Fair trip.
Mrs. Reuel Sward of Omaha visited Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Branting and daughter. Pvt. Vern N. Eklund of Manchester Conn. spent ten days with his parents. Leonard Thompson of Lincoln visited relatives near Shelby. Oscar Samuelson and family joined the Lindahls for Sunday dinner at Hordville. Betty Stanton returned from San Diego to attend the State University in Lincoln. Gwendolyn Fillman of York plans to move to Washington DC for work. Chas J Olson of Lincoln Tel and Tel Co. returned home after a two week visit in Seattle and Bremington Washington.
Rev A W Lapthorne leads morning worship at 11 00 am with a sermon A Prescription for our Generation Church School at 10 00 am There will be no morning service Sunday Sept 27 as the Nebraska Annual Conference convenes at Trinity Church in Lincoln Sept 23 The pastor will attend the conference starting Sept 21 in Lincoln
Sunday School will elect officers next Sunday. Ladies Aid will serve lunch at the Linnie Ericson farm sale on Thursday Sept 24. Numerous visitors and moves involve the Carlson and Hanson households with travel between Hastings Denver and Lincoln. Church worship at 10 00 with Rally Day at 11 00 and a brief officer election. The pastor commends the Osceola Record for printing notices.
Albert Hult of Stromsburg appointed by the Governor as Chairman of the Polk County Local Draft Board replacing the deceased V. J. Anderson.
The Osceola event by the Art Thomas Co. drew big crowds despite Friday rain cancellations. Governors Griswold Foster May and Chas Bryan spoke. A Saturday Pet Parade awarded prizes to 11 children and their animals. A Saturday dance at Kelly's Hall hosted by local firemen finished the weekend.
Alma Hayhurst leaves Shelby hospital to take up teaching in Grand Island this week. Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Bennett visit Shelby before returning to Tucson, Ariz. Rev. and Mrs. Stiverson and Barbara plan Washington D C home, visiting Omaha and Kansas City first. Neil B. Grigham joins U S Army Air Corps. Ray Brigham takes son to Omaha for Fort Leavenworth. Adolph Alt and Mayme Carrolls family visit Omaha. Carrolls remain. Baby Carolyn Lee Stogdill born Sept 4 to Gerald and Anna Marsden Stogdill of Xenia Ohio, daughter of Anna Marsden of Shelby.
Mrs T Adolph Micek Isa belle and Mrs James McMeekin joined Mrs Alvin Broder as they journeyed to Grand Island for the day. Frank Lassek’s wife Frank Lassek reports their son in law John Smolen of Omaha left for the U S Army. Edward Trogarz and family hosted guests and plan visits. several locals visited relatives in nearby towns. A wedding attendance noting Sgt Aloise Kubicek in California to Tillie Matya of Columbus is recorded. Frances Lassek returned from Omaha after a month’s work away.
Darrell Williams entered the U S Navy August 21 1941 and was attached to the U S S Wasp He is a Yeoman 2nd class and uses equipment for navy air corps He is the son of Mr and Mrs L C Williams of Stromsburg and graduated Stromsburg high school in May 1941.
AAA cooperators sealed 936 loans in July and August totaling about 356 181 bushels. Loans averaged 380 bushels with farm and warehouse prices about 1.25 and 1.18 per bushel respectively, yielding a gain around 84 000 dollars while market price hovered near 96 cents. John Staroscik says about 600 more loans remain to be completed, boosting totals further.
The Adelson family held their annual picnic at Swede Plain Church Sunday with 51 attendees. Listed guests include Albert and Ethel Hult, Lovelle Lamoree, Dana Shostrom and daughter, Arthur Scholz and Freddie of Osceola, Ramsey Nelson and Havens family, plus numerous Adelson relatives from Polk and vicinity. Guests from Chariton and Denver also attended.
Mrs. Victor Krumbach returned home Thursday after a week in Stromsburg hospital. Miss Irene Krumbach helps with housework. Several Thelens and Mee Keag families visited last week. Arthur Gabriel joined dinner with the Heimer family. Loyola Thelen attends Victor High School. Thelen family visited Frank Messing relatives Sunday.
