Clarence Van Ostrand, 29, of Polk County, serves as a parachute jumper with the U S Army at Spokane Washington. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Roy Van Ostrand of near Thayer. He was employed four years at Louis Schott farm near Osceola and entered the army in May 1942.

Obituary for Mrs. E. S. Gooden of Osceola
Mrs. E S Gooden died at her Osceola home after a brief illness. Glendora Stone born March 24 1870 in Niota Illinois came to Nebraska at two and spent most of her life. She married Ed Stanton Gooden June 10 1888 and observed their 50th anniversary in 1938. Survivors include husband three sons Dee Glenn Kenneth and four daughters Harriette Velma Maude and Jessie. Funeral services were held at her home by Rev S W Longacre and interment followed in Osceola cemetery.

Osceola schools opened on Monday September 7 for a new term. Enrollment totals show 116 in the grade school and 98 in high school courses. Wayne Frazier’s resignation created an athletic coach vacancy filled by Oscar Alexius who has taught at Lincoln High and will lead the Manuel Arts Department.
