Merle Miller of Lexington plans to study Veterinary Science at the Agricultural School in Curtis. He is the grandson of Mr and Mrs Si Cook and formerly lived with the Robert Millers in Osceola. Forty former neighbors of Mr and Mrs Martin Jones held a wiener roast and watermelon feed in the Jones Watershed pasture on Wednesday evening August 27 with some youngsters fishing in the pond.
The Class of 1983 starts first grade with 37 pupils at Jeffrey Grade School. Morning class has 17 students and afternoon group has 20 students under Mrs. Neola Anderson.
Margaret Peterson of Osceola is awarded the $100 Ceres Club Scholarship by the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture and Home Economics. Peterson, a junior majoring in food and nutrition, will become a therapeutic dietician after graduation and also holds an upper class Regents Scholarship.
The Polk County Recreational Assoc. and Valley View Country Club establish a reciprocal agreement enabling members to use each other’s facilities with dining privileges and golf upon green fees. Osceola Development Corp. elects new officers for the coming year led by Mike Snodgrass as president and Phil Nyberg as vice president with Jay McDonald as treasurer and Martin Roberts as secretary. Polk County Republican Women postpone their Sept. 8 meeting indefinitely and Bean Days events proceed with free beans, barbecue beef, and a chicken barbecue on Saturday. Kimmel Street designated as one-way from south to north for access between the grade school and high school. Mrs Gregg Johnson hired as new clerk at Bush Drug replacing Mrs John Cerny.
The Record launches a 12 week Armchair Quarterback Contest with weekly entries due by 5:00 p.m. September 12. Winners announced each Friday starting September 18 with $5 merchandise certificates redeemable at sponsor merchants. Tie breaker question offers crucial edge.
Anne Davis joins Osceola faculty this fall after teaching in Aurora for two years. A Nebraska native and Kearney State College graduate with a BA in Education and French minor, she emphasizes American study through travel and photographs to connect lessons to students. She helps with Girl Scouts, enjoys camping and hiking, and will live with two colleagues in the former Conrad house near the post office.
A cousin’s Europe tour and other trips inspire Eldena Lindblade to celebrate home and the natural beauty near Lake Ericson. The narrator describes a loafin’ vacation with scenic drives, a chalk mine stop, a climb of 210 steps, a calm day by cottonwoods, and humorous misadventures like a window entry and plumbing woes.
Baptisms at the United Methodist Church Sunday August 31 welcomed Corey Lee son of Mr and Mrs Larry Wieseman and Robert Lewis son of Mr and Mrs Leonard Davidson. Willard Hanson of Fremont visited Labor Day weekend with Rev and Mrs Richard Odgers and family. the Hansons are Mrs Odgers parents.
Osceola High School opens with 45 member football drills led by Coach Gordon. Principal Kenneth Sipes reports enrollment at 156 with 13 new faces including Ronald Boruch and Connie Lux. Freshmen join the pep club as new cheers and June parade prep set tone for the year.
Local riders at Aurora attend the Hamilton County Horse Show on Sunday August 24 with Goldenrod Saddle Club members among the victors. Wins include first mile race for Jon Tonniges Hardy Huggler and Jim Marak. balloon race second for Jim Marak. third flag race. The Goldenrod club plans a September 10 meeting at Tenniges Chevrolet to elect new officers and invite all members.
Mr. and Mrs. Chapin Peterson and two children relocate from Yankton South Dakota to the vacant Keith Cook property in south Osceola. Peterson works at Dale's in Columbus. Osceola teachers Anne Davis Yvonne Baker Nancy Richardson occupy Gary Conrad house near McDonald’s. Paul Schreiter Holdrege Osceola faculty lives in Sullivan house in south Osceola.
Osceola Boosters sell season tickets for 1969 football, good for all home varsity games. Tickets cost 3.50 and are available from Booster Club members, offering savings over four single admissions. Schedule lists games against East Butler, Stromsburg, Clarks, St. Ed, Henderson, Polk, Palmer, Genoa, and Homecoming vs Silver Creek.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Branting celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with a buffet at home on Sunday. Guests included Norwood Creekpaum and wife from Omaha Kermit Branting Micrae Muriel and H B Brantings from Stromsburg Richard Kentopps and Ann from Fremont Jerry Kriegers and Pastor Paul Konig.
Lifeguards Randy Gissler and Bill Norton wrapped the season at Osceola pool on Monday September 1. Signs were removed ladders stored and the plug pulled signaling season's end.
