Polk County's annual county fair closed last Friday night to one of the largest crowds, with exhibits across departments up to standard or better. The three day event drew keen competition, better programs, and no accidents. Despite heat, audiences stayed engaged and the fair expected to break even, a point of pride as other counties curtailed events.
Fairview notices the Beulah Cemetery Association will meet Friday September 10 at the Community Hall with entertainment by Mrs. Myra Hastings and Mrs. Laura Wilcox. Other items mention births, funerals, illnesses, horse losses from sleeping sickness, local travel, visits, a minor auto accident, and family birthday gatherings.
The families of Mark Timm A. J. Herrman and George and Lydia Engelhardt visited Elias Timm Monday evening to mark another milestone. After gifting, they shared a delicious lunch and enjoyed a pleasant gathering.
Announcement of the marriage of Alvena Adelson to Robert Stohl at Grand Island on Friday August 27. Local and visiting residents share travel, teaching assignments, church society meetings, and social calls across Polk, Texas, Seward, Grand Island, Ravenna, and nearby towns with numerous family and church connections.
At the Columbus invitation swim meet last Tuesday, teams from David City Grand Island Columbus North Bend Genoa and Osceola competed. Osceola's Robert Mills Margaret McFadden Wesley Parks and Tommy Mickey earned four ribbons with Mills taking third in backstroke and second in diving, McFadden third in diving and Parks fourth in backstroke.

Wesley Chapel celebrates winning first prize on its collective agricultural exhibit at the County Fair marking fifteen consecutive showings. The community honors all helpers and notes local happenings from windmill tower history to school openings, visits, and family gatherings.
Dr and Mrs Blum and Postmaster LaMunyon left for Minnesota for a week of fishing and camping. Mrs Thelen returned from Tenstryke Minnesota after a visit with her son Eugene Thelen. Kinney and daughter Betty visited Shelby family. Betty stayed with grandmother then returned. Several locals vacationed in Minnesota and other trips. Ellen Gonnerman had a enlarged operation. Sam Cook injured plowing, no bones broken per X rays.
Stromsburg School will open on Monday September 6 under Superintendent W R French. Five new teachers join the high school: Ralph Granere York instrumental music Miss Laura Hull Wahoo commercial Miss Eloise Jeffrey Stromsburg home economics and H R Widman St Edwards Smith Hughes Agriculture. Marvin Hersey resigns as athletic director to lead YMCA Beatrice program.
A group of local citizens toured a modern seed corn processing plant in Coon Rapids Iowa. The facility handles 2500 bushels daily with drying to 17 percent and on the ear sorting and shelling. A 40000 bushel auxiliary drying crib is under construction. Visited fields showed strong uniformity across Hi Bred Seed Corn varieties. Attendees included August Senn Werner Johansen Ed Schott Garet Mentink and Adolph Grossnicklaus.
A bus of 25 Lincoln Junior Chamber of Commerce members toured the city Tuesday. They were greeted by locals with balloons and programs for the fair highlighted by a wild west rodeo September 6 to 10 and a 14 day turf racing program.
W. W. Norton of Osceola named examiner for Polk County with Grace Pheasant Johnston as assistant. Applicants must apply at Norton’s office, pass visual and written tests, and drive a course test. Licenses under Legislative Bill No 147 expire after two years, with renewals required. examinations run Sept 1 to Nov 30, 1937, or later.
