The Polk County fair opens with favorable prospects and strong exhibits across all departments. Baseball sees rivalries with Ulysses defeating Rising City 6 to 4, while Stromsburg and Genoa face off next, and many Midway concessions and attractions draw crowds as the event nears its final day.
John Carlson born in Sweden March 15, 1853 died August 26 1926 at an Omaha old peoples home after two months as an inmate. He lived in Stromsburg as city engineer and plumber, then Osceola with a plumbing shop. He leaves two stepdaughters Mrs J E Peterson and Mrs H B Maxwell. Funeral in Stromsburg cemetery with Rev Sard.
Channing Doggett a 17 year old youth arrested for auto stealing was sentenced to one to three years in the state reformatory after arraignment in York district court. Police carried him to Lincoln from Columbus where he claimed to be 21 and from Osceola, with home and age corrected after further details. He said the car was stolen at York circus grounds to visit his girl in North Dakota.
North Loup residents Mr and Mrs Harry VanHoosen and children called on Louie Johnston. Joe Tschauner and family visited Frank Schauners in Osceola. Louie Johnston and family hosted Mile Johnstons near Havens, and G J Mentink called at Paul Tleiske’s in Gresham. Ed Johnson and daughter visited Staplehurst. Lauerman siblings John Viola and Clara from Stromsburg stayed with Louie Johnston’s children.
Frederick Harvey Ball born October 27 1857 in Pepperell Massachusetts died August 26 1926 in Osceola Nebraska aged nearly 69. He moved to Wisconsin then to Nebraska in 1879 settling in Polk County served as County Judge from 1900 to 1918 and 1915 to the time of death. Survived by wife Florence Clark six children four grandchildren two sisters and many friends. Funeral services were held at the family home conducted by Rev G T Lavery with Masonic rites.
A roster for Polk County Schools 1926 27 shows teachers by district with extensive name listings headed by Dist A. The document enumerates numerous educators including Marie Schlesinger Mabel Wolpert Tennie Schlesinger Mary Shea Mildred Johnson and many others across multiple entries.
Mrs Joe Petersen returned that week from Harvard. Renus Johnson arrived from Chicago with his sister Miss Esther of Omaha to visit their mother Mrs L G Johnson. Mrs O F Alfred came from Polk with daughter Vivian. Grant Douglas and children visited from Lincoln for the fair. The Veteran’s Bureau in Lincoln may resume literary work this fall. Out of town relatives attended Judge F H Ball’s funeral from Shelby Minden Grand Island Yelkhorn and Alve Nebraska.
Luther League meets Friday at 8 PM hosted by Charles Walgren Jr Martin Jones and Rudolf Carls er. Confirmation class Sunday at 9 AM. Sunday services in Swedish 11 AM and English 8 PM with themes Wouldest Thou be made whole and The Mystery of Godliness. Ladies Aid Thursday afternoon at Mrs Gast Boden. Bible Study postponed for State Lutheran League Convention report. Choir practice Friday next week at 8 PM.
Mrs R M MacDonald came back Thursday after a month visiting relatives in Memphis Tennessee. Miss Kilma Johnston returned today from Grand Island where she stayed with the Earl Hassler family for a week.
County Clerk John Sjoblom acts as county judge following Ball's death. Commissioners meet to handle routine business and may appoint a successor to fill the vacancy until after the fall election. The session will also review claims from the primary election, and it may take several days to finalize an appointment.
Sunday visits mark from Fremont to Shelby with Dick Buelow hosting. Delegates chosen at the Republican county convention in Osceola included Geo H. Presson and E. M. Burke. Polk County Fair winners in multiple livestock and pig club divisions are listed with top exhibitor names such as Roland Fredrickson and Raymond Wagner.
The Osceola school board approved a half page advertisement in local papers to highlight the advantages of a Osceola high school education. The notice touts the school as among the finest and best equipped in Nebraska, offering a quality opportunity in a moral environment.
The Methodist Church invites worship with Sunday School at 10 Church services at 11 and 8 pm The annual conference is set for September 14 The Record office thanks Mrs Rudolph Urban for donated watermelons Frank Andrews received 17 months in state penitentiary after pleading guilty to theft from Fred Schmoker’s home and being bound over on August 13.
Ex governor Sam McKelvie challenges Charley Bryan to debate state finances with talks offered at any time. Bryan declines to speak, marking the first known instance of a Bryan refusing to discuss the issue when given a chance.
Notice for parents on entry ages for Osceola Public School. Children five by the first semester may enter kindergarten when school opens. Parents whose children have not attended kindergarten may enter them in the first grade if they will be six during the first semester. J. C. HAGEY, Superintendent.
Keith Snider attended a Tuesday evening dance at the York Country Club hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Eckles for their son Robert. Snider was taken to Lutheran Hospital in York last Friday for inflammatory rheumatism and is improving but will remain hospitalized for some time. Miss Vella Zang and Miss Minnie Franzer left Omaha Sunday for a two week outing in Denver.
