Polk County Fair Closes After Three Days Of Entertainment
Polk County's annual fair ended last Saturday night with a financially successful run despite lower attendance. Highlights included strong ball games featuring Stromsburg defeating Genoa and losing to Ulysses, and a pulling contest. Prizes in light and heavy horse divisions went to Arthur Johansen and Rudolph Gissler among others. The night fair disappointed as the scheduled troupe failed to appear and an Omaha substitute did not meet expectations. Partial prize list covers cookies, muffins, breads, rolls, sewing, and Women’s Extension exhibits with multiple winners named.

Norton Named County Judge in Peole County
W. W. Norton was appointed to succeed the late Judge Ball as County Judge in Peole County. He began duties Tuesday after approval by county commissioners. Norton, Polk County native and son of J. N. Norton, is the youngest to hold the office and is a law graduate with honors from State University. He had planned to teach history and athletics but requested release due to the appointment.

Fred Dunn and Geo Gilbert were callers at the Hubert Hotchkiss home near Stromsburg last Friday. Mrs Effie Rutter is slowly recovering from her operation. The Hartmans left for a Lake Ericson vacation and have not returned. Julius Nebosis and family visited Duncan Saturday. W P Hansen and children visited Rudgit Urbans Sunday. Calmer Dunn went to York with wife and son Lewis who is recovering from an operation. Naomi Hartman visited Grace Mickey in Osceola. Buchta couple moved to Lincoln for the State Fair and returned. The Gilberts and Mrs Clark Valentine visited Columbus. Valentine formerly Allinda Hotchkiss of Osceola. Most schools began last Monday with good attendance. Hansen, Dunn and Gilbert helped hay at Rudolf Urbans meadow. Prairie hay is short but good. A week of rain preceded, with a very hard rain Sunday and another on Tuesday. Hansen vaccinated hogs for Rudolf Urban and Calmer Dunn.

Axel Anderson Dies at Stromsburg
Axel Anderson died suddenly Tuesday morning at Stromsburg likely from heart failure. He was 72, longtime Polk County resident, lived on a farm north of the city, then moved to Stromsburg ten years ago. Survived by wife, two sons Arthur and Frank, daughter Esther Lamb, and two brothers Nels and Charles. Funeral Thursday afternoon with burial in Stromsburg Cemetery.

Train Kills Two In Silver Creek Detour Crash
C. E. Mackay an itinerant salesman aged 45 and Miss Margaret Strayer 18 of Lincoln were killed when Union Pacific train No 20 struck their Ford roadster near the Silver Creek detour crossing while en route to Grand Island. Mackay had an artificial leg and used a crutch. the pair had traveled from Lincoln to Columbus earlier that day. Relatives say they planned to visit Miss Strayer’s relatives in Grand Island where she was to wed Roy McCone on the same day.

Gresham Farmer Drowns in Platte River Near Duncan
John M. Carlson a 32 year old farmer from between Waco and Gresham drowned while fishing with Herman Robson and Albert Robson of Gresham near the Duncan bridge. He had been under medical care for fainting spells and likely fell unconscious into two foot waters. Carlson’s body was found about 10:30 a.m. by his companions on the north bank. He leaves four brothers and two sisters.

Hartson Girl Breaks Arm Jumping From Stool
