The October meeting of the Board of Education, District 19, approved use of the downtown gym for a Cancer Society teen dance and a morning exercise group. They planned auction disposal of old building items, voted wall mats and a demonstrator vacuum, and approved an honorarium for Dr. Robert Manley.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Ahlschwede of York announce the engagement of their daughter Marlene Elaine of Auburn to Paul Schreiter of Holdrege. Miss Ahlschwede is a Kearney State College graduate and both were Osceola teachers.
Beth Fjell daughter of Mrs Joe Fjell and a sophomore at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont was crowned the 1975 Homecoming Queen at a pep rally. She majors in elementary and special education and is a varsity cheerleader treasurer of Pi Epsilon sorority and yearbook staff member. She is the first sophomore chosen by student vote from seven semi finalists by the Midland football team.
Knights of Columbus Council 5383 met October 12 at Sacred Heart Church in Osceola. Mass for Christopher Columbus was offered prior to the meeting, about twenty members and wives attended, and donations and event plans were approved including a monthly Good Samaritan Center prize donation, a Homecoming parade float entry, a Hunters Breakfast on November 1, and a harvest bee on October 21. Jackpot winners were Lawrence Meister and Jerry Bonsack, with John Hannappel named Knight of the Month. Continuous planning covered meals, tickets, and volunteer efforts.
The Osceola High School marching band is one of 14 Class C groups in the 18th annual Nebraska Marching Band Festival at Pershing Municipal Auditorium in Lincoln. About 4 500 high school musicians are expected. the 1975 event is the largest yet, with 73 bands and revised schedules. Proceeds fund scholarships for senior musicians pursuing music education. The event runs from 9 a.m. Class D to 1 p.m. Class C, then 4 p.m. Class B and 8 p.m. Class A.
Polk County has completed a draft Planning Study Report on the proposed Rochon East improvements to Route 356 from the southwest corner of section 22 to the southeast corner of section 24 in Township 16N Range 1W. The report covers grading culverts and hard surfacing and is available for inspection at the Polk County Highway Superintendent office. Comments may be submitted until November 30, 1975.

Polk Cubs ground game dominates as they roll to 300 yards offense while OHS gains 155 on 44 plays. Dan Bond scores for the Bulldogs and Rich Hayes adds a PAT run as Polk leads 14-0 at first quarter and 20-8 at halftime. Bulldogs finish season with loss to Clarks Bombers on home field.
Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz touts a five year grain agreement with the Soviet Union promising steady exports of six to eight million metric tons of wheat and corn annually. He says the deal stabilizes prices, ensures supplies, creates jobs, and supports foreign exchange and petroleum purchases.
Osceola gains new chief George Shepard after completing his first month in the role. He brings eight years in Plattsmouth and Louisville police work, training from Omaha University and FBI programs, radar certification, and Navy veteran status. He plans to move his family from Plattsmouth after selling their home and looks forward to serving the community with his wife Carol and children Teresa and George Jr.
Tim Peterson won a $5 gift certificate after a close tie with John Cerny and Roy Hedlund of Stromsburg. Peterson predicted Nebraska 31, Colorado 20, edging the field as Games 4 and 14 were excluded for mismatches.
A special meeting of the Nebraska Feed Grain Growers Association led by Earl Strong will gather at 2 00 p m on Monday November 3 at the 4 H building in Aurora The group seeks farmer reaction to the grain export embargo and possible actions to counter price drops A proposed target price for the 1975 corn and wheat crop and legislation to prevent future market interruptions will be discussed.
