A Polk County boy in the service of Uncle Sam. He trained at Camp Roberts California and serves in the infantry at Camp Houze Texas. Pvt Kontor, son of Mr and Mrs John Kontor, joined the Army on November 7 1942.
William Parkinson, former Polk High School superintendent, was fined ten dollars and costs by an Omaha municipal judge for failing to yield to a pedestrian. The accident killed William Porter of Omaha as Parkinson’s car, traveling about 15 miles per hour, struck him. No charges were filed as the incident was ruled purely accidental.
War Food Administration announces October to December 1943 payments for dairy producers. Whole milk 30 percent, butterfat 4 1/2 cents per lb, butter 3.2 cents per lb, cream 8 tenths of a cent per lb. Drafts issued directly to producers upon county AAA committee evidence.
Polk County reports record fundraising in the Third War Loan Drive. Final tally: total subscriptions $495,048.25 exceeding the $470,200 quota, with contributions from Series E F G notes and Treasury securities across towns including Shelby Stromsburg and the county, plus thanks from the County Chairman. A closing note advertises handmade aprons at Steeple’s Store.
Ray mond Kantor, son of Mr and Mrs John Kantor of Osceola area, lost sight in one eye during army maneuvers at a Texas camp. No details released. He is expected home on furlough soon.
The Ball family announced their child had tonsil surgery Friday morning. Mrs Cook and Mrs Messing underwent major surgery last Wednesday. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Rinke on Friday October 22. The child of Mr and Mrs Vernon Cole remains hospitalized with injuries from a car accident.
Showings of Yankee Doodle Dandy spark tickets for Campfire Girls and Boy Scouts with Jimmy Cagney’s Oscar winning portrayal of Geo. M. Cohan. Net proceeds benefit United Service Organizations. Friday night only October 29 with 7:00 and 9:30 p.m. showtimes at the box office.
Polk County sends 27 students to the University of Nebraska this fall with Osceola supplying 11. Seniors include James Peterson in teachers college Kay Huston in agriculture and Bess Ray from Shelby. Others are juniors twins seniors and freshmen across Arts and Sciences Engineering and Dentistry.
Mrs. Chet Wells and her mother visited Friday. Frank Lassek and daughter with Eugene Larsen family traveled to Kansas City Kansas. Maurice Spitz of St Paul visited his parents. Edward Lisko and Sill Lassek families visited Louis Smolenski near Silver Creek. John Wilezinski of Columbus visited James Gonka. W F Crozier and Phil Micek spent Monday in Omaha on business.
The Polk County Fair Association holds its annual meeting at the county courthouse in Osceola on Wednesday November 3 starting at 1 p.m. Secretary Louis Hastert announces the gathering.
The navy reported the loss of the U S submarine Dorado on a Sunday. Dorado, launched last May, carried 65 crew members. Bruce L Anthony of Hackberry precinct is named as a crew member.
Soldier Pfe Jack Hastings, home on furlough from North Carolina, has been the honored guest at multiple family gatherings. A Sunday picnic dinner hosted by Miss Nelle Wisely drew about thirty relatives with guests from Grand Island Benedict Central City and Kansas City. Hastings planned to depart Wednesday for Seymour Johnson Field North Carolina.
Miss Murial Peterson of WA C from Washington D C visited the Tom Schmoker and L E K Treadway and Lockard families during the past week. W F Crozier trucked his popcorn crop to Omaha Monday and Mrs Crozier spent the day with Mrs Floyd West. Elaine Treadway and Harold Hise of Omaha spent the weekend with her parents. Mr and Mrs W F Crozier visited with Mr and Mrs George Crozier at Genoa last week. Mr and Mrs Lester Davis and their baby of Humboldt spent the past few days with Mr and Mrs Floyd West before returning home Wednesday.
Wesley Chapel Club members met with Mrs. R. C. Dunn and Mrs. Earl Watts on Thursday afternoon October 21. Project leaders Mrs. James Gibbins and Mrs. Arthur Deeter discussed fall and winter clothing patterns and remodeling due to limited new clothing. Mrs. Gibbins reported on each member’s garden produce and storage for winter.
Louis Hastert Polk County Fair secretary will be in Osceola in the county court room all afternoon Wednesday November 3 to pay fair premiums. Those wishing their premium money before that time may get it at Hastert’s store in Shelby.
Mr and Mrs G. Gree nwood and daughters spend the week with relatives in Emerson Iowa.
Mrs Minnie Swanson hosted a Osceola Sunday family reunion with about forty attendees including Egnar Hultman of Denver Rev Edick Anderson Polk A Nor ese and others. Local residents attended dinners and conversations as teachers and visitors traveled from Chicago Lincoln and San Francisco.
Pfc Bernard Korger from North Camp Polk La visits Shelby on a ten day furlough with his parents. Mrs Archie Haas from Hutchison Kansas visits her aunt and uncle M J Arner in Shelby after relocating from Glendale California. Mrs Lottie Marsden moves to E G Brillhart residence for winter. Edna Mae Kumpf returns home after medical treatment at Stromsburg hospital. F M Logan travels from Peabody Kansas and Moccasin Montana area to Shelby region. Capt A J Merrick from Lawndale California and family visit Polk and Butler counties before returning to California after two weeks furlough.
Raymond Kepner was elected to the Board of Directors at a stockholder meeting held last week for the First National Bank of Osceola.
All business houses will be closed to push the drive forward. Ten committee men from the nine precincts will lead. Details of the meeting to be finalized at precinct meetings on November 1 and 2. The goal is one ton of scrap for every Polk County boy in the service.
Ray Cole, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Cole, sustained severe scalp wounds when struck by a Nelson Bros dairy truck driven by Leonard Nelson of Stromsburg. The incident occurred last Thursday morning and he received medical treatment at Shelby hospital.
LaRue D. Beltzer aged 61 editor and publisher of the Bradshaw Monitor shot himself at his home behind the Monitor office in Bradshaw last Tuesday night. He had run the paper for 34 years and had been in ill health for several years. Beltzer learned the printer's trade in Osceola during boyhood.
Elaine Hasselbalch and Richard Thelen of near Shelby wed at Sacred Heart Church Shelby last Thursday Oct 21 1943. Rev O Boyle officiated with attendants Virginia Hasselbalch Paul Kuhnel Mary Rose Thelen and Thomas Carter. Bride’s parents are Mr and Mrs George Hasselbalch groom’s parents Mr and Mrs Herman Thelen.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Hiemer and Dennis attended Sunday dinner at the home of Mr and Mrs Henry Ebel Sr in Bellwood for Sgt and Mrs Harold Ebel and their baby from Scott Field. Helen Ebel of Lincoln visited her parents the Thelens and Richard Thelen married Blaine Hasselbalch. Mrs Hiemer and son stayed with Mrs John Gabriel in the valley while Mr Gabriel visited Omaha. A charivari gang gathered at Ed Schinzel's Tuesday evening and a dance was planned.
Donna Lee Sundberg and families from Lincoln and area were hosted Sunday by Axel Johnson in Valpariso. Harold Carlson and family visited Lyle Dornburgh near Arborville. Birthday observance held at Harold Green home with multiple locals attending. Aviation Cadet Conrad Olson recently finished training in Kansas College and moved to Santa Ana California. Clyde Cypher of North Platte visited Mrs. Ella Shank on Tuesday.

Technician Fifth Louis P Kontor entered the army February 26 1941 and trained at Fort Knox Kentucky as a tank corps member. He currently serves in North Africa and is the son of Mr and Mrs John Kontor of Polk County.
Anthony Schott, a long time Polk County farmer and landholder, died at his farm near Osceola after a prolonged illness from heart disease. He was born October 19, 1859 in Alsace Lorraine and moved to Polk County 58 years ago, living first near Shelby then in Silver Creek. Surviving are his wife predeceased, two daughters, four sons, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral at Silver Creek church conducted by Rev. S. J. Zukowski, burial in Shelby Catholic cemetery.
