The 4.9 miles of paving on Highways 16 and 81 near Osceola finished on October 23 after a four week effort. Workers and engineers reportedly felt emotional at completion as the project neared acceptance though final approval awaits.
The Annual County Meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary convened in Shelby at the U B Church on October 19. County Chairman Mrs John Lucas presided with District President Mrs Novak and Polk Unit led initiation. Memorial service featured members Kepner Campbell Scholtz Cornish Reece and McFadden of Osceola. Delmar McFadden elected chairman for the coming year. next gathering slated for Osceola.
Miss Erma Vogelsang daughter of Mr and Mrs Erwin Vogelsang married Orlie Anderson son of Mr and Mrs A F Anderson at Trinity Lutheran Church Oct 3 8 oclock Sunday morning Rev F H Melger officiated The couple will reside in Carbondale Illinois where Mr Anderson works for Cut Rate Department Stores Inc The bride attended Central High School and Southeast Missouri State Teachers College The groom studied at Luther College Wahoo Nebraska Best man was Alexander Wagner
The Lutheran Church schedules a Thursday 9 a.m. woodcutting bee at Carl Cederberg’s home with dinner provided by the ladies. Harmony Society activities pause for a week. Sunday features Sunday School at 10 a.m. and Communion at 11 a.m. At 7:30 p.m. Miriam Chorus from Swede Home will perform a concert with Rev. Sward delivering a Reforma tion Day address. A Tuesday 7:30 p.m. meeting will discuss the pastor’s resignation and leave of absence. Wednesday 8 p.m. Harmony Society gathering at Frances and Ruth Boden’s home, Rev. Paul Melin, pastor.
The Lincoln Nebraska Methodist church provides a 10:00 a.m. Sunday School led by El ton Berck, an 11:00 a.m. Worship with the sermon What s the Risk in it , a 5:00 p.m. Junior League, and a 7:30 p.m. Temperance program featuring Death Takes The Steering Wheel. A missionary Educational Institute under Bishop Oxnam meets November 1 2 at Trinity Church with no registration fee and overnight lodging. W H M S S meets November 2 at 2 30 p.m. with Mrs Smith from Mother Jewel s Home as guest speaker and hosts Mrs Edith Pearson and Miss Rilma Johnston. Albert C Monkman pastor.
A gasoline transport truck driven by George Kyser of Bellville Kansas jackknifed and crashed into the east side of the Sandine Oil Station five miles west of Osceola on Highway 16. The impact caved the wall and toppled the building from its foundation. Mrs Sandine and her young daughter were at the station and frightened. The stock truck involved remained undamaged. Damages are around $100 to the station and the transport.
HACKBERRY Temperance Day will be observed at Greens Chapel next Sunday. The Ladies Aid will meet this Thursday October 28 at the church with Mrs Ester Bergren and Mrs D E Powell as hostesses. Victor Club met Tuesday afternoon at Mrs E E Gabels near Osceola with fourteen members, two visitors and seven children. The Family Christmas was the lesson topic. An apron pattern session drew interest. A special meeting is planned for November 5 with Mrs Rex Brigham to discuss her summer trip. Victor School closes Thursday and Friday. Mr Albrecht goes to Omaha and Miss Burke to Lincoln. Gravel has been laid on the three miles of road past Greens Chapel linking gravel roads. Visitors from Annesly and several local families were entertained at various homes through the week. Several social and travel notes involving Osceola Stromsburg Gresham York Fullerton Aurora Shelby Loup City Arcadia and Omaha residents are listed along with weekend visits and plans for Halloween events at the Stephenson home.
Miss Gladys Matthes and Howard Moser were married on Tuesday October 19 at Seward by County Judge Wiegardt. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Glenn Deland of Osceola. Both graduates of Osceola High School they plan to live in Osceola where the groom works at Mickey Produce Co.
Shelby residents recount travels to Wyoming Lincoln and Fremont. Halloween party preparations at Sacred Heart parish hall. Mary Lou Thelen visits from Midland College while families host guests from Kearney Osceola and Salem Oregon.

Mrs L A Kahler visits Polk while families visit neighbors across the region. Local gatherings include the T C W Club meeting October 28 and the Swede Home Ladies Club gathering at Mrs George Anderson’s home. Women’s Missionary Society plans a November church parlor session.
Osceola lost a one sided game at Exeter Friday 34 to 0 after an early pass interception for a touchdown. Exeter then scored at will as Osceola appeared to lose heart. Tuesday Osceola defeated Shelby 13 to 0 in a fast well played contest.
The Cemetery Association will meet at Community Hall on Friday November 12 with a covered dish lunch and all members are urged to attend to arrange lunch service for the Louis Hester Sale. Miss Hattie Lucas is hospitalized in Columbus for surgery. Several residents visited Columbus and Lake Erickson. A funeral for Walter Mills was held in Westerville after his death from a kerosene incident. A D L Heinemeyer party sponsored a student council convention delegation to St Joe Missouri representing Nebraska high schools.
Reeb Bros Motor Co displayed the 1938 Chevrolets in Osceola last Saturday. The showroom event drew over 200 visitors checking the new models and noting changes from 1937.
Polk County women from town clubs gather for their annual convention at the M. E. Church on Friday October 29 starting at 10 AM. A noon luncheon, afternoon business session, and social time are scheduled with an invited public.
Miss Millie Smith and Zeno Mackay of Scottsbluff Neb were married July 24 in Scottsbluff. Millie, a Polk High School Class of '34 graduate, later studied at Lincoln School of Commerce. Zeno is Nebraska University graduate. They will reside in Scottsbluff where he works.
County Agent F B Kelly announced a two hour 4 H entertainment unit at Osceola High School Auditorium on November 10 starting at eight. The program features an all talking version of Under the 4 H Flag plus a 4 H news reel an educational short Hidden Values and a cartoon. Admission is free and the event aims to boost 4 H interest and pride statewide. A county attendance contest offers $2 000 in prizes with the top county receiving $1 000 for 4 H activities.
